Can you change the color of a plastic swimbait?

Post by Otay Michael »

I got some nice bottom bouncer cheapy (Storm) 4" and 5" swimbaits at Wallyworld (they was a discounted batch - 4 for a buck fifty as Storm is re-packaging it's products and spreading 'em out to make it look like there are more in the package, when there is actually less, and making more per sale, a good marketing move on their part).

BUT they aren't the nice yellowish color that River2sea makes and that has been working well for me, but a bright white that does not work at all, at least not where it was!

Question: is there some way I can dye the plastic a bit yellow (or brown, or ?). Will the plastic take it? I don't want to put it in the sun and take a year, so don't suggest that you jokesters out there :-(.

Thanks in advance.

Otay,

you can try using some of the dipping dyes like spike it. I imagine that they will work just as well on swimbaits just use a cue tip and paint away. as far as the yellowish color you might have to mix up a few colors of dye. Chart. and a lil orange? might work.

good luck!!

In all honesty yammamoto grubs, skirts, etc... are horrible bleeders. But at the same time can be used for your benefit. I would find some yamamoto baits in that color put them in a scent like bang or yamamotos scent place them out together and let the magic happen. These baits do bleed quite quickly, CJ may have some better input in terms of controlling the experiment.

Other then that dip dye would work.....

The spike it dies will work and so will a sharpie. The sharpie will bleed but if you factor the bleeding in before you color the bait you should be able to get some colors you like. It will only take a couple days for it to bleed. Experiment with one bait and see how it looks before you do them all.

If you boil your swimbaits to get any oil out of them. This will allow you to put any color you want on them.

Besides this boiling will get the plastic even softer, just what you need for slow rolling.

Thanks to all, you're the best. Just ordered those three colors as Marty mentioned, from mixing those three in varying combinations you can make any color out there- that's what painters (incl. me- i'ts one of my hobbies) do. Tackle warehouse had them for only $3.69 ea, most stores wanted 4.99 to 5.99 per.

Plus, my Mustang PFD is still backordered, they put it on that order and saved what some folks would have charged for shipping, $8, basically getting the products for free this way!!!

PS Here is one of mine from a photo I took in Patmos, Greece (where John wrote the book of revelations, it was a Roman prison Island 2,000 years ago!).

Got my dyes and the Mustang vest (real happy I went with the best made, even though it was WAY out of my budget, but then again, what's your life worth (I know, still overbudget with that factored in!).

'Spike-It' Dyes worked great -ordered red, yellow (Chart) and blue + the pumpkin to save mixing. Here is what I did on the first couple using just the Pumpkin (wll, Chart. tail). The back one is the original Storm WildEye' shad, bright-white and unchanged.

I just used a brush, I think it worked great.

Thanks again to all, especially Marty.
