Good Article on AB1253 in WON BASS - Great Info Hutch!
Hutch's column in the current WON BASS edition was a very good synopsis and editorial regarding AB1253, which could directly impact the striped bass fishery in the Delta in a short period of time, and longer term forbear other assaults on our "non-native species" such as the black bass. This potentially has far-reaching consequences for other bodies of water, so everyone should pay close attention and get involved to protect all our waterways!

From the Front Seat – April 2009
Delta fishery under assault
With the massive State and Federal budget debacles making daily headlines, the perennial favorite of outdoorsman across California, Senator Diane Feinstein has decided to direct her attentions towards something much more pertinent to the economic future of this State and our Country – the Delta Smelt.
In a letter written to the heads of the California Department of Fish & Game, California Fish & Game Commission, and California Resources Agency on December 18th, 2008, Feinstein expresses concern for the Delta Smelt due to “predation by native fish by Striped Bass and other non-native speciesâ€

Once again, Bill Hutchenson hits an issue right on the head with his usual big, blunt hammer. I especially love the line about walking snake fish with lazers!
Good stuff. As Bill says though, this is not a funny matter at all. most of our state and national polititions are certifiable, and their knowledge of all issues related to the outdoors come directly from organizations like the Sierra Club and PETA. Add in huge amounts of money from the Packards, and their absolute distaste, (maybe hatred?), for the outdoorsman, and all the pieces exist for them to completely destroy the Delta. They WILL do it if they get the chance. Just check out the MLPA fiasco. Thank you Bill, for a solid opinion piece, and thank you Mr. Tuna for getting on for everyone to see. J

Re: Good Article on AB1253 in WON BASS - Great Info Hutch!
Thanks Guys.
This is a deadly serious issue that all anglers should pay attention to. The lefties have used this same "divide and conquer" tactic with firearms and labeling the striped bass as the problem comes straight out of their playbook. We see the enviro-"mental"-ists doing this everyday. Here are a few examples.....
Seals vs. salmon
Cormorants vs. any type of fish
trout stockings vs. mud snails
What these idoit environmentalists do not know is that everything has a time and place under the sun. Species have evolved and gone extinct since the beginning of time. It is simply nature taking its course. I guess is may come as a shock to these lefties, but humans too will someday become extinct - either by nature or thier own hand.
O.K. the doctor said I wasn't supposed to get my blood pressure over 250 before 9 in the morning. Please take this legislation seriously though and take the steps to write the committee prior to this meeting.

Re: Good Article on AB1253 in WON BASS - Great Info Hutch!
So is there intent to do away with size a bag limit's on Striper's that it will eventually get rid of all of them or hurt the popualtion enough to attain there goal.
I dont see that happening. Some people in private boat's up there might take advantage of it but there is no way all those potluck boat's up in San Francisco and Berkeley are going to take 20 people out and let them bring back 20 fish each.
Just think we pay these people very good six figure incomes and this is the kind of crap they come up with.
I do get e-mail's every now and then from Sam Farr regarding the Salmon problem. He does seem concerned I am going to e-mail him couldnt hurt.

Well written article, clear and to the point and would think this board would be lite up with replies. There is more debate over the Palomar knot.
I'm not a supporter of the striped bass being introduced into trophy bass lakes via the aquaduct system. It is obvious that fishing pressure alone will not impact the striped bass population in the Delta, striper fishing pressure has little affect on a small reservoir like Castaic.
The impact of AB1253 will be a stepping stone to eliminating all sport fishing, based on non native fish impacting native fish populations. The striped bass is just a pawn or vehicle to get the ball rolling. Sports fishermen are a dwindling population, especially in California. The general population loves the outdoors, as long as it's there for their use and that may not include bass fishermen in the future.

It's really to bad more of us don't see through this Bulls%#t as there really is an agenda here that is pitting sportsman against farmers and in the end both groups will lose, big time! The tea & crumpet environmental wacko groups will walk away smiling and we'll lose some more of our freedom.
Very good analyses Oldschool.

This kind of crap is what the politicians thrive on. When election time comes, voter turnout is usually less than 50%, and the politicians know that only a small percentage of that 50% are people like us...citizens that can see thru it. So they are free to do whatever is next on their list...this time it is the issue described above. Its too bad the average citizen that sits at home on the couch cant see the big picture. They say"I dont fish so who cares what they do to the fishery."
This bill is another reason why I have already looked at property in another state. When the time comes, the state of California and all its corrupt, self serving, mercenary officials can take their agendas and do-gooder sharade and stick it..
PS Bill, the link is broken..

Sorry for the length of the post, but figured it's best to get all the info on here too. I know I am way too lazy and apathetic to worry about something I think does not affect me in any way. Probably a shared sentiment, but a dangerous one. I'll shut up now.
AB 1253 the bill to wipe out striped bass: Have you written your letter yet?
April 7, 2009 -- AB 1253, the bill introduced by Assembly woman Fuller (Bakersfield) to deregulate and remove all support for the striped bass is still on the agenda to be heard by the Assembly Water Parks and Wildlife Committee. CSPA has sponsored a letter writing campaign to kill the bill in committee and we understand our supporters are having an impact. However, this is no time to slack off. Each and every letter received by the committee is counted as pro or con and the totals are reported on the date of the hearing. We want to make sure that the pile of letters in the pile recommending the bill be killed overwhelms those in the pile recommending its passage.
You can track the bill on-line at the following site,
http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/acsframeset2text.htm
The bill will be heard by committee on April 28th.
The committee secretary states to be the most effective we should do the following:

Dear Assembly member __________________,
As a California angler, voter and taxpayer, I strongly oppose AB 1253, the bill introduced by Assembly member Fuller, intending to delist and remove support of the striped bass as a California game fish.
The striped bass, a fish legally introduced to the State by the California Fish and Game Commission, established itself as one of the state's premier game fish and coexisted in harmony for over 130 years with the state's native fishes. Even in the 1930's when the striped bass population was believed to exceed 12 million adult fish and the species was fished commercially, the fish did not impact the state's salmon stocks or the health of the delta's fisheries including the delta smelt and the longfin smelt.
The striped bass fishery along with the chinook salmon, steelhead, delta smelt, longfin smelt, American Shad, green sturgeon, white sturgeon fisheries only began to decline with the operation of the State Water Project and the Central Valley Project in the late 1960's. As exports have increased, the populations of all of these fishes has crashed to all time historical lows with the delta smelt now on the endangered species list, the longfin smelt threatened, the chinook salmon run the lowest in history. The current striped bass popluations is also at historical lows.
The striped bass is a fish of legend and has been a part of California's angling heritage for 130 years. AB 1253, a bill sponsored by a number of water districts is an obvious attempt to transfer the blame of the decline of California's once great fisheries to one of the species that made the California Delta one of the greatest fisheries on earth instead of their insatiable demand for larger and larger amounts of delta water. They realize that if the delta's fisheries can be destroyed, it is one less reason to obstruct the draining of the delta for subsidized agribusiness farming.
Please vote this bill down when it comes before your committee. If passed, it will do nothing to restore California's once great fisheries and will cause the destruction of one of California's greatest game fish.
Sincerely,

Hutch,
I truly appreciate the article and believe exactly as you have said, but now i am totally confused.
i'm slow at catching up on my bass magazine reading, so on my trip to China this week i grabbed my Western Outdoor News magazine from March '09 to read on the plane.
To my surprise and astonishment, there was a big article right at the front of the magazine that is titled "Save a Salmon, Catch a Striper".
The article goes on to explain how the salmon are on the brink of being lost due to low numbers, and we as fisherman need to help them by "educating" as many stripers this season as we can to save the salmon. Quote "grab a rod and save some salmon!"
To be fare to the article, it goes on to talk about catching stripers, which was good info, but the main message of that article is clearly that stripers are apart of the problem with low salmon count and we should kill them. This is EXACTLY what that stupid bill is saying to do.
WON recently published your excellent article about the craziness to proposal AB 1253 but then went and wrote the exact opposite article about how us fisherman need to go catch and kill as many stripers as we legally can this year to save the salmon.
Where does WON really stand on this issue and why doesn't somebody see the hipocracy in publishing both articles within weeks of each other? Doesn't an article written like this just give fuel and ammunition to that crazy bill?
Your thoughts are appreciated Hutch. I hope you can respond.
Thanks,
Kopper

Re: Salmon, Striper, and WON
Kopper Bass,
Sorry for the delay in the reply. Frankly , this thread got buried and fogetten about until I got to looking for something else and came across it.
Regarding the article done by JD Richey for the Magazine, it was a mostly tongue in cheek peice as noted in his final paragraph and I quote:
"So do your part to help King Salmon. Okay, you may not really be helping the salmon runs out a whole lot by catching spring stripers, but it's an awfully exciting way to kick off the spring and summer fishing season. See you out there".
Richey's article has no scientific basis and was in my opinion written from the standpoint of an "attention getter" After all, if the stripers were really eating the bejebbers out of salmon, why would the hot lure talked about in the article be topwater baits and not some type of smaller trout colored swimbait?
While there is no question that as a Pacific Northwest angler that JD Richey (who is a freelance writer and not a WON employee) it a stout supporter of all that is salmon, he was not in a serious way insinuating that he supports AB1253.
From my standpoint as a WON employee, I can tell you that everyone in the office I have spoken with on this issue is opposed to AB1253 and while we have to see where this thing ultimately goes, I feel comfortable saying the the company position on this bill as it stands is to oppose it.
