Opinions on summer event please

Post by Gary Dobyns »

What is everyone's feelings on a larger event on Clear Lake in the summer. A 6 hour event. My thoughts are, the fishing is good and it would beat the heck out of some of the places and dates that we get dragged too.

Clear lake in the middle of the summer is a hot as h#ll. I have a few tournaments there this summer I am not looking forward to. Delta with the wind is at least a little relief.

Either case I will make it if I can.

I agree, I like Clear Lake in the summer. Sure the tourney day is short but the fishing is at its best (for me) Come on Gary what do you have in mind?

Gary, I like Clear Lake in the summer and I have be thinking about and working on in my spare time of an event but I was thinking about next year.

Maybe with some help it could get ironed out - the coordination. But it is just an idea! I was thinking that some of the best fishing I have is during the 6 hour limit put on us by the DFG. Plus there in no big tournaments during this time so getting permits should be easy (I think). I'm just throwing out my idea and looking for feed back.

Have a double elimination Team or Pro/Am fishing tournament in July (I like Pro/Am better but drawing new match ups may be to hard to do because of time). It could be called “July Madnessâ€

I like the idea. Look at the frog tournaments. Very good turnouts.

I like the fish in the evening one day and in the morning another.

We need more innovation. Heck it doesn't get dark to 8pm.

I hate that all the derbies are pretty much in the Spring.

as i understand the last note guys would fish in the morning and then go back out in the afternoon ?? is this right ?? our club looked into this and fish and game said we could do this but could only have a total of one day limit weighed in ( 5 fish) can tourneys get a exemtion to this.. fish and game said the only way to have a split weigh in more than one daily limit would have a 6-12 pm and then after midnight go back out as this would be two different dates ???

I think it would be fun... We could fish 2pm - 8pm on Saturday and 6am - noon on Sunday. You get to fish both bites and folks have plenty of time to get there and to get home.

Marty your idea is great, but illegal in terms of getting the permits. It was mentioned above that for that style of deal, you could only weigh in a total of 5 fish for BOTH sessions. The only way around this is to get a seperate permit for each 6 hour session.

The six hour restriction was put in place to protect the fish during summer tournaments. The dual weigh-in is specifically mentioned in the provisions for the permit in that it precludes dual weigh-ins as well.

The split weigh-in Angler's choice tournament was a lot of fun.Are you thinking of a pro-am along those lines,or something different?

A one day Pro-Am style, 6 hour, more for the working man/woman (that are left); No membership dues, no late fees, sign up at the lake, low entry fees: It seems that a a.m. tournament instead of a p.m.; will have less competition with skiers ? Maybe take it back to Lakeport ??

$1000 entry, 3 day event! 100% payback, Top 30 or 40 cut a check.
$50-75k for 1st!

3 day official practice, 2 week off limits, cooch is the weigh master, sTony on the computer and dobyns on the release boat checking all of our fish for survival rate.... Gotta keep the big man off the water some how!

Thanks guys. With all the conflicts for dates I think maybe FLW or "possibly BASS" could have a summer event. Fishing is awesome, I'll agree with the post "hotter than hell", but dang do you want to fish Havasu in Jan or Mead in Feb when 50% of the field blanks? Just an idea. Thanks for the responses. As you all know "people" watch this site .
