I have lost two at clear lake and one at the Delta. The one at the Delta was on a rip fish in Taylor in Nov. and i cast a crank bait out after I lost the rod and got my rod back with a 3lb fish on the end.

I keep my wallet keys and phone in the glove box. If it goes over, I follow it even in february. They dont sink that fast, you can catch up to them.

Wrapping a small piece of pipe foam insulation around them just above or just below the reel might slow em down enough to make diving in more likely to succeed. Just a thought.

I believe most rods do float, it's the reels that sink em.

Bass pro shops sells these foam rod floaters that strap to your rods.

http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/store ... rchResults

I used to have one of these on each of my high end rods, but got soon got tired of them. They don't interfere with using the rod but sure don't look pretty.

I know this is a trick question but would this be the answer – the rod is heaver then water? Did I get it right?

Also if they made them float they would not sell as many rods.

C'mon Marty! Heavier than water? haha...I s'pose followin' that theory a 1lb lead weight wouldn't sink in a 2 lb bucket of water. It's density mi amigo, not weight. A buddy of mine took an unexpected swim a few months ago and his Mossyback Loomis went in the drink with him, he came up, was pissed, thought he lost his rod/reel, and sure enough it was floating 4 feet away from him. I talked to Loomis and they said that this isn't a feature built into their rods, but only a lucky break that there was enough air caught in the blank when the butt cap was sealed on, that it allowed the rod to float even with a reel on it. Pretty good deal if you ask me. An impenetrable balloon inside each blank would be a good idea, but it'd be hard to do and not affect the action/balance/sensitivity IMO.

Hell just but a long party balloon in butt of the rod, and fill it with air, then put the butt cap on!

What about a leash. Maybe in rough water conditions a small piece of thin parachute cord could prevent the rod from going overboard.

rods do float If you use the right reel. I use the magnesium reels and they are light enough to float on a bass rod. The chronarch 50 mg does the trick. I'm sure the revo and steez would work also

Casting my punker this past weekend and my braid locked up on me and my $300+ combo flew into the water, lucky enough to grab it right before it went too deep.

Ya I wish there were floating COMBOS.

Bumped a G2 Dobyns/Chronarch D combo while fighting a fish. Got the combo back, landed the fish & got some bruised ribs to show for it. Tell you what, did I ever feel lucky :D

I got it !! i got It !!!

My special invention is a rod that has a air bladder in the butt section that once is soaked blows up enough to float to the surface. ok ,ok, ok So i was thinking if they can make mustang life vests that will float a 200# fisherman why cant they make a smaller version that goes inside a rod handle and can float a (2# combo heaviest at best) ?? just a weird thought i've had for a few years.

not weird. i've had the same thought.

i got REALLY lucky once. my buddy was teaching me how to drive my new (to me) bass boat last year when one of the two set-ups i had brought with me that day went flying into franks tract as i was cruising at around 50mph. first thought ..... "s--t!". second thought, i hope it floats. third thought, even if it floats how am i going to find the rig? i'm hundreds of yards past it already.fourth thought, someone is going to find this thing (cuz it's only 4 feet deep here) and have a really good day. anyway, the puppy floated and we somehow found it. thank goodness cuz it was a steez rod and a steez reel.

I remember fishing with Andre Moore one year in the Tract and a 20 lb. striper took his rod and reel ($300-$400) right out of his hands and we both watched it glide through the water and out of sight!...I almost jumped in after it but I knew that was an unsafe thing to do...Andre just laughed!...$$$$$$$$$$$$$...

How about a small CO2 cartridge in the butt end of the rod, then design it like the vest all of us where these days.

Drops in the water, wait 1 minute and your rod floats to the surface!

It could probably be designed as an and on device.

Balance point would be tough and avoiding areas where your hands go is tough, but it can be done.
now if there is someone with connections out there!!!!

they already make a miniature pfd it is for your keychain. IT looks like a automatic door opener and inflates an air bladder when submerged.

rod builders should charge the blanks with helium. i would make them incedibly light in your hand, and lighter than water. put a nipple recesed into the lower grip to keep em charged.

All of these things add weight to your rods and I dont want more weight. In 25 years of fishing, I have only lost 1 rod. Must have kicked it over with out knowing because when I got back to the dock I was one short.
