Most definitely!! Tacklewarehouse is typically as cheap (on a regular basis) as they come. An occasional sale (at times local stores would offer buy 3 and get the 4th free), I would stock up! :D

On rare occasions where I'm desperate, I'd pay whatever ... but ... rarely!

I always try to buy online.. Best competative prices. Most shops don't have another store to compete with so why lower prices? I bought 3 packs of paca craw chunk trailers the other day at a store because I was out.. It cost me $10. Tacklewarehouse only wants $1.99 a pack less than $6.
Ohh son!! That's a 4, 5 ,7 8, 12 punder son!!

Support your local tackle shop. You never know when you might need them.

Always???? That is tough, keep that up and there will be no shops left. I work in the industry and can't believe the tack that people show. Will you match ebay prices? I can get that online for cheaper! Are you really gonna make me go home and but it online for$10 less? YES I am! It is a business not a giveaway.

The word is tact. Just like you feel the customer is not being considerate of your brick and mortar shop, you are being inconsiderate of their right to buy a product for the best price.

Yes, you can tell them no I will not sell it for that price. That is your prerogative but to assume that a customer OWES you patronage is ridiculous. Maybe you need to consider adding value to your product rather than sitting behind the counter and whining about customers. Good service will outweigh price much of the time.

If you can not use some TACT and match the price "this one time", you will continue to lose customers to the online stores. Try to sell the customer something the online guy does not have and get your profit with higher gross sales. Show the customer some respect. Be of assistance and basically friendly. Nobody will need to go anywhere else. Kind of the lost art of retail IMO.

We are fortunate where I live in Hemet to have a pretty good local shop. I dont fish as often as many of you and I rely on their knowledge and recommendations more than most I suppose. Yes the prices are a few dollars more then BPS or onliine but it doesnt hurt me that much and I am happy to help support them. Hopefully they do well in this economy and are able to stick around.

Just my two cents...

I can see both sides. I appreciate local shops and always spend a few buck in them when prepping for a tournament in the area, etc. I will gladly spend more on baits to the tune of $4.99/pack vs. $4.39 or something at my favorite online store. That said, I will not even consider paying $5.99 or more for something I can buy from the company's site (not usually as cheap as a retailer) for $4 something. Economies vary with rent, employee salary, and overhead but never is it reasonable to charge in excess of 50% markup what any individual can pay to buy from the source. Admittedly it is tough for a small shop to compete these days, but many of the large online, and brick/mortar stores started against the same ods and made the right business moves to grow a successful business.

Robert F, it's nice to see sound thinking in a WB post. Especially in today's tight economy shopping for best price for non-essentials (sports, hobbies) is smart.

Times have been changing for awhile now when it comes to how people shop. Buying things online makes a ton of sense:

1. Faster, more convenient, and cheaper than driving to a shop

2. Gives you the option of shopping for price (i.e. it's smart)

3. Encourages you to plan ahead instead of buying things on impulse

4. Gives you an automatic 8%+ tax discount if you shop at non-California online stores that also ship for free (if you buy enough at one time). FWIW, California crossed the line for me this last tax increase: I now do everything I can to buy from out-of-state suppliers.

To those who say online buying will be the death of local shops, well, the more aggressive local shops have already opened up their own online storefronts, some with pretty good prices. These days it's relatively easy to go online.

I do buy from local shops but usually only when the price is right or when I get caught short.[/b]

I wish all of the only line stores and the local shops as well would just shut down..Just think of all the money I would save..

All kidding aside, I do both, shop on line and at local shops..There are advantages and disadvantages to both..Personally I prefer the local shops so I can throw in some BSing while there..

cib I agree but you forgot to add the 6.00 shipping cost that would bring your total to 12.00 compared to 10.00 at your local shop. Unless you buy 50 dollars worth of baits and get the free shipping of course.
Just making a point. I will pay a little more at a local shop. Especially if they treat you good and put you on a good bite occasionally.

I agree support your local guys I do I stopped in at the Hook line and Sinker and Bought a Rod and reel a couple weeks ago I know I could have got it cheaper elsewhere but Gene has always been a stand up guy and real cool to me over the years so you bet I am gonna support him when ever I can.

I am suprized with BPS I dont even shop there anymore thier prices are inflated and they buy in BULK like Wal-MART SO THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO CUT THE PRICE BUT THEY STILL RIP YOU OFF! I paid 40.00 ea. for 2 life vest and they are nothing fancy use to get the same ones at Wal-Mart for 19.99 (dont have em now?)

I do buy from TW from time to time they have great prices and ship super fast like I get my stuff in 2 days ! But the big stuff I will support my local guys

If you want to give your money away to *support* your local tackle shop go ahead.. I don't bring hoe over 7k a month I bring home less than half that now so I cannot afford to *support* anyone else but me and my family.

If you are so concerned with supporting people why dont you support our troops! Seems everyone has forgotten who gives you the right to support who you want!

Hey Cib that's what I exspected its the way things are out here in CA, seems its cool to floss when the bank roll is fat but when the roll shrinks its all about me. What ever happen to the "shirt off my back?" All im saying is if I find a rod on line and I am saving like 20 bucks what's the big deal give the 20 to the locals they are the ones opening early for us anglers they support the anglers and events "give back when ya can"

I give a 20.00 bill to those beggers on the corners yall know the ones at least once a month my wife says im crazy they are just running scams. ok, so what? I am doing ok so I pay it forward, good karma goes a long way. I am not rich I work my butt off as does my wife but if I can support or help out alittle here and there then I will

Living in the Bay area is a blessing and luxury. I am a generation X kid (37) who has seen and delt with it all. In the early 90's Cd's came out and the local record stores were dying off day by day.
Then came the Napster era ( don't get me started) and MP3's.
Times are and have been changing fellas. It is terrible to see businesses come and go in the fishing tackle business. I have been a loyal and faithful patron to my "local" (20 miles away) Tackle shop. Fortunately i have know him for 15 yrs and respect him and his business 100%. Sure i could go buy the gamakatsu hooks and bullet weights cheaper at k-mart or wal-mart. Is that what is important ?
I work in Medical Sales and have always believed that great products sell themselves and that great customer service does not have a price tag. Gentleman we owe it to our local dealers, stores and shops to make it through these tough times. So if you cant afford supporting them in the same way then cut back from last year BUT continue to buy from your "local" tackle guy and not just move on to the "cheaper" priced website or mega store.
If you don't support them you will be just like me in the 90's looking to find 12" single records to mix with only now it will be the 12" worm custom poured by the "local" guy only at the "local" store that you can't get anymore along with all your other "LOCAL" stuff you wish you could get. BUY and support LOCAL business

Congratulations Jon Walton on over 25 years of excellent customer service. Thank You for your Knowledge, Mentoring and breathing bass fishing to us the "LOCAL" bass anglers in the bay area and surrounding areas.

Prices on Baits?

I got a group of friends I fish with and we all try to save. I know I buy a lot. I got more than what I need but always forget. It's just going to keep going on and on. I love fishing!!!

I don't care who is cheaper! I care about what the difference my dollar is going to make! My uncle owns a shop. Do I still support all the other locals, yes!

Think of all these new local bait makers who made their brand successful because of the local shops. How about the local programs for kids supported by local shops? Who are you going to ask your question to? Don't you feel more confident asking a local tackle shop, with local fisherman, that have been fishing for 20 plus years just in the same local area you fish, how do i ..............??????? How do you???????? what should I do????????

So do I worry if i spend 50 cents more a pack, nope. How many times have I walked my local shop and had a pack of worms, spinnerbait, spool of line or discount thrown at me WITHOUT ASKING... Support your local guys!!

Same reason why I spend so much time on westernbass, because it's all my local information.

SO on my way home from pleasanton, i stop by to see John. When I leave Clear lake I see Bob Higgins. When I am preparing for my next journey out, I go see my Uncles @ HI's. After a outing on the Delta, I go see Gene at the Hook!

Yes I do the ebay thing and shop online, but if i am out and about i do my business with the fellas!

Well said aNNieNsaLTIE that is the one component missing, the human contact component. The conversation that occures at the tackle store, the help, the friendships etc... I guess I am the opposite as most on this board, I go local first then online as a last resort. I enjoy going into the tackle store, hearing the stories, seeing a NB flicking a rod in the air wondering if they are swatting fly's or really trying to gain an understanding of the rod....

+1
When I get the same deal as a dealer for a few of my products. Then I go in the store and see the price 2x what BPS has which is DOUBLE what the dealer price is.... I go online for other stuff and say the heck with it.

I understand there is an overhead, but a mom and pop doesnt have a 10000 sqft warehouse, 25 employees web designer etc to support. They have 1-2 employees if that. So please, there is no need to double and triple your price to "stay afloat"

That is what drives me to make big purchases online. Im sorry but like he said, I am not paying 7 bucks for a jig and a pack of trailers when I can get the same thing from the company for 2.50. Or 4$ from BPS.
