Beware of Coopertone Sunblock spray

Post by Dan Stahlman »

While going down Clearlake last week a can of Coopertone spray spilled out of its can in my glove box. The ensueing liquid ran down my vinyle dash and into my passenger seat leaving streaks and spots on both and even on a Curado reel I had by the passenger seat. Try as I might with everything I could think of I can't get the streaks out. I contacted Coopertone and they basically shucked me off. My question to them was if their product did this to my upholstery what was it doing to my skin. She very patiently explained that it was meant for skin not upholstry so naturally it would probably have an adverse effect on it. Big help. Anyway, anybody have any bright ideas what I can try? Someone suggested 303 cleaner or a debreaser!!

Sh*t......I have had numerous bottles of that crap (brand new) just not spray. In fact my wife just bought two last week and neither worked. I'll stick with the hand apply method.

If simple green or 409 don't take it out it might be damaged. That stuff might have done type of chemical reaction and messed it up. I spilled some on a orange pfd and it changed colors in spots.

As far as spray on and regular sunblock the nuetrogena 70spf is really good. It isn't oily and don't sting my eyes

I've always been told that any of the spray sunblocks can eat through the gel coat of a boat and to never spray it while on the boat because of this. I've never seen it happen or know anyone personally that its happened to, could be an urban legend, but I'd just rather not even test it.

I had copertone overspray on my boat last year and it was a B to clean vinegar applied heavily broke it down then spray wax afterword.

I do agree the neutragena is better in terms of oily and eyes.

Make sure the excess spray when putting it on doesn't get on your electronics screens too. It will F them up big time.

Hey Dan, I once had a big Black magic marker that I kept in the boat Leak under the cap. I pulled the cap off to color up some briad and it went all over my seat and consol. I was a littlte POed. didnt know what to do then the wife says to clean it with tooth paste. It took a little scrubbing but I was amazed that it took the Permanant ink off the vinyl without dicoloring or stainging it. Give it a try, I dont know why it wouldnt work on sunscreen when it works on Marker Ink. Hope it works for you.

Way to go Vince.
I would avoid the spray on sunblock, I sprayed some on last year at this time, next weekend went to pick up my glasses and it ate right through the frames! They were cheap so I wasn't too mad, but just fair warning!

Might be Justin, it was the only thing I did any different last year than I do this year, or the years before.

MAN.........You just solved the mystery of what happened to my Costa Del Mar glasses also. I have the green(GLASS) polorazied lenses and I must have had some sunscreen hit the front of the lens because it looks like the outer layer of lens is almost kinda liquifying....kinda oil-spill-ish. Doesn't effect your view/vision when you've got em on, just makes the lens look inferior I suppose. Totally cosmetic though, so it's cool.

Cheers
