Swimbait rod

Post by X_24 »

I am looking for a rod that would be able to throw 6" LP Jrs, Baby Wakes, 6" hudds, and baits in that range. I have looked at the fig rigs but I have heard they are too stiff, has anyone used them for baits in the 1.5-3.5 oz range?

X_24, I got two choices for ya. If you want to strictly fish punkers Gary Dobyns made a short handled version of the 795ML called a 795SBMT (SBMT= Swimbait Mag Topwater) specifically for Punker fishing.

OR you can get a 795ML and have what I consider the best/versatile Medium sized swimbait rod on the market. You can get a gen 1 rod cheap at Tackle Warehouse or get a newer gen 2. I have 3 of the gen 1 795's and love them for punkers. Just depends on your wants/needs

Try Phenix
Swimbait 711ML 7'11" 10-25LB Fuji Alconite Fuji 1-2oz 6.1oz / 173g Fast 3 - Med-Light $229

Phenix has created the ideal swimbait rod. Strong but lightweight, the Ultra Swimbait series pulls no punches. The split grip handle design provides ergonomic comfort, minimizing fatigue when you are casting those big swimbaits all day long. Only the best components are used on Phenix rods – Fuji reel seat and Alconite guides, to give you the added security that you will bring in that big lunker.

If I could find one for 100$ I would not be asking for suggestions. I'm a little tight on money and I have looked at the Dobyns 795ML and know that it would be my dream rod but does anyone know of an alternative? My buddy uses a 7'6" heavy clarus and says that he loves it but I liked a rod designed for swimbaits.

I'd look for a used okuma, it's a great rod with a lifetime waranty and no hassles.

A new Okuma only costs $110 at Tacklewarehouse, and they're have a 15% off sale right now.
Their 7'6" swimbait rod is perfect for 6" punkers.
