Jigs is the old dam out yet?
Re: MCclure water level
It isnt.
Both ramps at mcclure point are up, the dam is well submerged. the tunnel between mclure point and s. barretts is almost out of the water.
Btw. I have a new fishing report from today 9/11 for mcclure too.

The real issue with the water level is ...... WHO CARES it is McClure...
one of the nations top fisheries for fish 12"-13" long thats about all its good for. I know I know you are going to tell me about the 17 or 19lber that was caught a few years ago but not the boady of water that puts up 20+ sacks. Maybe if the water gets lower we can find fish worth catching.
I will never waste a drop of gas driving up to that place again.

Re: MCclure water level
Last weekend we took the boat through the tunnel. Holiday traffic on the lake was not bad at all. Waters low but had a blast anyways.

Apparently those of us who fish Lake Mcclure care.

Re: MCclure water level
GSC686, don't hate a lake just because you don't understand it. There are a some good quality fish at Mcclure you just need to know where to look and what to throw. I like the delta too don't get me wrong but its a place where almost anyone can go get a 20 pound bag on a particular day. There also have been plenty of times in the last few years where it has taken 20+ pounds to win a tournament at McClure. Its true there are an abundance of fish in the 12-13 inch class but there are big ones there too. Fish for little fish using little fish baits and thats exactly what you are going to catch but how many other places in the country offer you a ligitimate chance to catch not only a world record largemouth but spot as well.
Re: MCclure water level
it takes more skill to get a 15 lb. limit at mcClure then a 20 lb limit at the delta. you arent seeing it much this year but you arent seeing many 30 lb. limts on the delta either.mr.bass91 wrote:GSC686, don't hate a lake just because you don't understand it. theres a fine line between fishin and standin on a boat like an idiot
Re: MCclure water level
GSC - That is a funny post! The reason some guys do not like McClure is because you have to actually have some skill to get a good limit! You go ahead and save your gas!!! Thanks for the laugh!
Re: MCclure water level
I caught 20lbs last week. Plus I had a double digit bass follow a wake bait back to the boat
Re: MCclure water level
Who said I was talking about the delta??? (Clear lake, Delta, Pardee all better fisheries)
Are you kidding me the only rebuttal is "well I had a 20 pound sack there once" and "where else can you have a chance a spots and a WR"
If it takes more skill to get a good bag out of that lake then it dose out the delta you McClure guys just proved your own shortcomings..... Because big sacks do not occur there very often, which by your own admittance means.... there is a lack of skill.... Better hit the water boys I hear the bite is so good up there you might get 12lbs for 5 today.. I hear the Elite series cant wait to set a tour date for McClure heck maybe even the Classic.
I am sure it is much harder than the Delta, because how many tides a day dose McClure have???? How many miles of shoreline????

Re: MCclure water level
I personally like Mc Clure. Its a good place to have a good time without skier hassle and wake board hassle. It's patrolled and they are tough, plus a youngster learning can catch fish and not get discouraged and quit. It's kinda like a small Oroville, I remember years ago , weighing in fish under 12" for a limit at weigh-ins. 5 fish under 5 lbs. WOW ! Now you want tough, try Don Pedro ! The Delta is a great fishery, but you can get into alot of trouble ther in a hurry. For me getting lost, and getting run over and the skiers trying to splash you, running right next to you is not my idea of fun.
Re: MCclure water level
Evry one else trying to make an argument for this lake should take Phils lead!!
Well spoken and good points Phil!!

Re: MCclure water level
fishing is totaly based on the body of water. Delta, mclure, don pedro, neither is better just different. Thats the beauty of this sport, your always learning something on a different on a new body water
Re: MCclure water level
Is that what you tell yourself after a day of spots and dinks???
Re: MCclure water level
dont be scared to fish more than five minutes from your house.
Re: MCclure water level
And I suppose you travel hours on end every week to fish this fine impoundment?? Yea, if you had access to a top notch fishery close to you I bet you would stick your nose up at this place to and concentrate on getting 25 - 30lbs once a month.
Don’t be afraid of catching some donkeys that eat baits the size of a McClure dink!!!

Re: MCclure water level
Catching 40 to 60 fish in a day is fun no matter who you are (if you have the right light gear)...even if most of them are 14 inches. Granded that tournement fishermen may not like a lake like this, but if you are just fishing for fun...McCLure is hard to beat.
Sometimes it is nice to fish somthing different. Use a different technique. For me, fishing the same body of water week after week, gets old and it ALMOST takes the fun out of it. I have an uncle who all he would fish for the last two years was Don Pedro. Don't get me wrong Pedro can be awsome at times, but I got to where I hated that place, just becasue that was all he would do. I like to fish different water, thats why i have expanded to the delta. I do like catching bigger fish, but for me half the exitment is figuring out how to catch them.
gsc686s...do you fish tournements? If so, how good are you? Do you win? Have you won?

As long as something is pulling on your line it's a good day. So what who really cares how much your five fish weigh.
I fish Nacimiento and it's the same Spot dink fest but some day's you catch some decent fish it's just FUN remember that part of fishing.
then my next trip is over at San Luis becouse we all know a 5lb Striper fights hard every bit as good as a Largemouth.
You want to have fun,try going 40 mile's out in the Pacific in a 28' boat......fun
but the fishing is fantastic.

Re: MCclure water level
GSC your just bitter, McClure must have been really tough on you! Stay at the Delta where 25 - 30 pounds is an average sack and really nothing to brag about
Re: MCclure water level
Once again can some one tell me when was the last time BASS or FLW held an event at this place, when are they planning to?????
I think I just herd crickets (cherp, cherp, cherp)
Fact is no one wants to watch guys catch your small fish and those anglers could give two sh%^s about this place. How may of the top pros are lobbying for an event at McClure..... ZERO
It just is not entertaining.
I am not saying just fish the delta there are 5-10 other bodies of water in CA that are far superior to this mud hole. Fish those places if you want.
Here is the real question if 25-30lbs is an average sack why would you want to waste your time with 12-15lbs average sacks at the mud hole named McClure.

no the old dams not out yet. this lake is fun catching fish on light line and a little finess worms. fishing isnt all about chucking a lunker punker on 65 braid. but hey thats your style of fishing dude you can wear your arms out holding a 8ft rod a 5 oz bait.

Re: MCclure water level
Keep in mind this lake is above the original dam, It fish more like a canyon lake with very few flats other than extreme west or eastern parts of the lake.
I fish both the Delta and Mc Clure and have had great tournament succes at both lakes.
Yes the average bag is small at Mc clure but it levels the playing feild when this lake locks down, the weights much like Oroville will be vey close 1st-20th place. I prefer to fish there in late december and thru feb when the Delta gets hard to even get a bite! Il take 40 fish days in january over 2-3 bites anyday.
The delta can definatley yeild a 20-30pound sack but I dont even beging to compare them. From aprill thru late may i wont be seen near Mc clure, ill be on the delta lookin for a Giant or several.
One is a river one is a resevor they both pose there unique challenges to an angler, if you can fish both of these bodies of water you will become a much more complete angler. Besides hasnt a drop shot caught a few giants on the Delta.
If you fish or are going to fish the Pro's the only true big time tournaments will be at Oroville,Delta,Shasta, and clear lake.
Mc clure is much closer than Shasta for spotted Bass Practice.
bottom line is when Spotted bass get introduced they take over a lake! Period ...these spotts will spawn thru fall. Mc clure has some Giants both spots and Large mouth and probaly has more fish over 9-10 lbs than the delta!"trout is the food source" Its just harder to catch them in 40ft than in 2-12 feet. I would bet the Delta has far more fish 4-5-6-7-8;lbs than Mcclure.
I will say smallmouth are being caught in Taylor slough and hybrid largemouth come from the mokulmne ,large mouth dont have rough spots on there tongue unless they are a hybrid!
Who knows what are delta will see as this year the eights are way down.
I dont care where Im at if Im fishing Im happy!!

Re: MCclure water level
Its sort of like comparing Oroville to Clear Lake, you have two totally different bodies of water and qualities of fish; Clear Lake will out produce Oroville by pretty much a two pound average; six pounds at Oroville is equal to eighteen pounds at Clear Lake.
The delta will out produce McClure by about the same average, two pounds per fish.
Now the average stick should catch a seven to eight pound five fish limit at McClure and a sixteen to eighteen pound limit at the delta.
You put a top notch stick on McClure or Oroville and believe me
"The tides change"!
When you get the guys who win tounaments at McClure (Lee/Menzes, Bruce/Charipotti) and Orville (Dobyns, etc;) and their catch is double the weight of the average angler.
This shows you that it takes a far better all around angler to catch a winning limit on McClure and Oroville then on the delta any time of year.
The studs of the delta will out produce everyone because they know it like the other 98% of us dont, but pound for pound you put these same guys on McClure and Oroville and they are very average.
The delta is sort of like shopping at Costco; you go there because you know that the chances of you coming home with something of jumbo size is pretty good!
But the same thing can happen at the bar on friday night if you drink too much!
