sub-surface striper rig tips

Post by bustout »

other than punkers or spooks (top water)....the only rig I currently have for sub-surface is a rattletrap.

I have heard of flukes and other hollow bodied rigs. Can someone give me an idea on what to start with and how to rig them (lead head or egg sinker w/ leader, etc)

thanks
Jack

Jerkbaits work really well. Also a fish trap, or a top hook osprey swimbait.

On jerkbaits (Lucky Craft Pointer, Rapala XRap) consider putting stronger hooks on. It changes the action but it helps you land the fish. :D

Fishtrap or Big Hammer swimtails work great. Put 'em on a 'swimbait' jighead from Revenge, Big Hammer or Strike King (redfish magic). Use heavier heads to go deeper. Use lighter head to run shallow.

I caught my biggest striper on a hollowbelly style swimbait. Used a weighted hook to keep it swimming correctly.

On the hollowbelly, they don't always 'get it' right away, keep the bait moving until it loads, then hit 'em. :D

A zoom fluke in pearl white is an awesome multi species lure. Rigged with a 3/0-5/0 hook it dart back and forth like a fleeing baitfish. you retrieve it either with a walk the dog like twitch or just stop and go.

additionally, you can add a droper line by passing the main line through the end of a swivil tie a 5/0 hook to the main line and anothe rto the dropper line. called a double flue rig. its on the internet if you use a search engine.

awesome fall , shad on top type bait. It can be reteived somewhat deeper as the 5/0 hooks will sink it, but a fast retieve will keep it in the top foot of the water. yep retrieve it very fast.

twitch twitch twitch..etc and repeat.

Spoons are a good choice also, especially as winter nears. Either spoon metered fish or find a hole next to shallow water or even spoon where birds are working. I caught 2 spoon'n last Monday.

Good luck,

I haven't had so much success yet with the Jerkbaits, Lipless and spoons, but they are indeed chewing the Big Hammers already and bustin' the snot outa Punkers and pencil Poppers!

It's so good right now, and since I'm going fishing in the guiding full time, I've just offered up a new morning session striper run during the months of October & November. I've been out every day the past two weeks and we've been smackin um good with 10-20 fish mornings. Some days it's just 3-7 pound schoolies, then outa nowhere the 15-20 pounder sho up one day. There are a few big gurls starting to show!

Old school Baby Bass and Snake Head pattern wooden Punkers have been the best bet for me on top. Mixin in the Pencil popper is also drawing many strikes once ya get a school activated! It's TIME!!!!

Rich didn't clear squat up for you Austen. HAR! HAR! HAR! The technique used when fishing a Punker is a slow, long glide version of "Walking The Dawg".

My reference to the "Snake Head" fish pattern, was to one of the newer paint jobs available from Black Dog on the Wooden Punkers! My experience the past two weeks has been that when using the Punkers, especially in the early mornings, up shallow, in the clearer water that I'm fishing right now, the better quality fish seem to be striking the darker colored baits with a light bottom, versus say the all White or Delta Shiner/Shad Punkers.
