Basstrix line Suggestion

Post by aNNieNsaLTIE »

Was out today and I broke off a fish on the set. I looked at the tip of my line and does not look line my knot slipped......... I was fishing a grassy area. I just think the line I was using is NOT abrasion resistant enough. I was using 20lb toray bawo. This is my second round with This line. I previously had 16lb and experienced the same thing.

I am ready to strip this line and spool up something in the 15 - 17lb range. I may resort to P-LINE CXX but I know this line tends to develope alot of memory BUT IS SUPER TUFF STRONG...

Is Braid ok w/ Basstrix.... for some reason I like throwing mono with these baits.

Thankx,
Steven

17lb if you are fishing heavy grass or near lots of rocks or wood and 15lb for lighter grass or open water.

Braid and Softswimbaits, bad combo...the braid wil slice up the bait.

Stick to mono

Did your line break at the knot? If it broke before the knot it may have incurred some damage from the cover or a submerged rock. There is no line that will not be damaged from heavy use. I always recommend frequent inspections of the line when its used in extreme conditions.

I have been using the 20# Toray Solaroam Upgrade for most of my heavy cover applications and for small swimbaits with excellent results.

Doesn't sound like the line is your problem, unless it's old, left out in the sun and heat for several days.
1. Use a good line dressing; KVD or Tanglefree.
2. Do not leave the lure tied on over night.
3. Set your drag to no more than 1/3rd the line strength; 6 lbs for 20 lbs line, more then most bass rods can lift.
4. Tie good knots; if the line is dmamged or flattened at the knot, retie.
5. Do not let the line contact the hook point when storing on the rod or traveling, it will damage it.
Line damaged from abrasion will have several inches of abrasions on the line. A clean break without abrasions and without a flat or curl indicates it was cut by a sharp edge or hook.
Test your knot by pulling agianst the lure and line, give it a sharp jerk, you shouldn't be able to break 20 lb line by hand with ease.
Toray is a premium line equal to P-Line or Max; I have used Max over 40 years and P-line CXX over 20 years, there isn't a panacea line on the market.

I just don't get it, 3rd cast of the day and I feel that hard bump. I let kill my basstrix from swimming and the next my rod loads up. I set and poof, just like that.

I had the same experience while using 16lb at berryessa swimming my basstrix over the flats.

I never leave anything tied on while stored. all my rod and reels stay in a dark closet. the line is off a fresh spool and this was the lines 2nd outing.

I think i just want the toughness i get from my pline CXX...... but in all fairness, I have caught a good number of bass line from this company... I am just scared of making another mistake of loosing a donkey!

Once you loose confidence with a line, change. It's more than likely the line doesn't suit your fishing style. Low strecth, high tensile line can have low impact strength, you can also have a bad batch of line. It can be very frustrating.
Your problem may be related to the hook used with the Basstrix or the type of knot and how it's chinched down. For example a Palomar knot is very difficult to tie on large lures becuase of the big loop required to pass the lure through. You can easily over heat the line when pulling up the tag end to clinch the knot. The Trilene knot maybe a better choice for example; simple to tie with larger lures.
Your hook set by snapping the rod back agianst slack line can be a problem. With swimbaits a crankbait type reel set and hard rod sweep works better for me, the bass is less likely to be going in the opposite direction with a head of steam and you can control the fish.
The hook can be rusted, have rough surface flaws or sharp edges at the eye and damage the knot. The rod guide could be cracked, lots of things can cause line failures.
