Oh great.....

Post by TEAMDEADMONEY »

My computer has the 7 day itch... Dont know how it caught it or how to get rid of it...
Im not very computer savy so I had Barry (NetB****) come over last night and look at it after he just had a great day on the water at the Perris tournament only to miss weighins because he and Rex were left dead in the water when the boat wouldnt start to go to weighins. The last thing he wanted to do was go in and try to fix my computer but he tried his best. After about 25 minutes he threw his hands up in the air and told me I was F*#^ed.

Can any of you computer guys out there point me in the right direction to get rid of the virus?? Is calling Geek Squad a good idea??
Its in need of some computer ampicillin :?

Its running and going decently fast. Fios rocks!!!

The problem is there is a spyware virus it says and the same couple popups keep popping up every 20 or so seconds with the alert popups... In the time that it has taken me to write the post, Ive had to X out at least 15 popups for alerts and Ive been taken to another web page twice..

Fry's has a $200.00 - $300.00 replacement every week if that's the route you take. The progran I was talking about will kill all Pop-ups and spyware.

I had the same virus and got it from clicking on a pop up that said I needed to virus scan because my computer was at risk. Just beware of anything that looks like that. My brother fixed it for me somehow and said it was from looking at to much porn. Hopefully you get it fixed.

start in safe mode.
download malwarebytes from download.com from another computer
rename the malware.exe to ohpoop.exe
run the install and do a quck scan.
should be good to go.

if the system is that new just use your disks and reinstall if it's that bad. make sure you backup your stuff.

that is a nasty virus but malwarebytes has it figured out.

good luck.

Sorry to hear about your computer problems. I went through 2 $1700.00 computers in about 10 years and each time I was told I would need a new mother board. I got pretty frustrated and yeah computers are a lot cheaper than they used to be. When the 2nd one went down they said I could get a new one that would run circles around my old one for about $500.00.

For me it worked like this, I don't want another disposable computer as I keep all kinds of valuable info and records on mine. I started looking at Mac's because friends at work had theirs for 10+ years with 0 problems. It would have cost me over $3000.00 to get the 17" that I wanted so I started looking on eBay and won what I wanted for $2000.00 new in the unopened box from a reputable dealer with a 3 year extended warranty. After getting the Macbook Pro I will never do PC again, they are way cooler than PC's. The mother board is made differently and there is no vent on it for a fan, it doesn't need one and its way more durable, all aluminum case. It can do things PC's can't and when you get used to it you will never want to use a PC again. Viruses are written for a target rich environment and there are a lot more PC's than Mac's around. No one I have talked to has ever gotten a virus on a Mac.

Also I was told by a computer guru that a good way to find great Mac's cheap is to look on Craigslist in the San Francisco area as that is where they get tested and when there done they can be picked up cheap. I logged on and they are all over the S.F. Craigslist, great deals to be had. No I don't sell them or have any of they're stock I'm a Firefighter who just loves to fish on his off days.

Best of luck to ya

TEAMDEADMONEY - If you have Comcast for an ISP .... Log into your home page and click Security on the top right of the home page and DL MacAfee for free.

It will take some 4 hours to install it right - and it will kick everything out of there for bug's and tails. -- and set up a firewall and other programs as well.

My dad's computer had the same problem. Here is what I did to fix it download AVAST anti-virus online. It is free and the best anti-virus program out there. After downloading and installing it follow the prompts to run virus scan on start up. Also run the spyware program that the other guys have set you up with and after that you will be back in business. Oh yeah and he had Macafee on his computer when this happened. Stick w/avast

Download Firefox. Install it. Set preferences to block popups. Make it your default browser. Install a spywate/malware/anti-virus program.

Also -- You can get a 3 TeraByte USB External Drive to back-up all your pic's/files/programs and lock into your safe from Fry's for $89 right now.

It is as simple as opening up two windows and "click and dragging" to the other window to transfer your folders to the external USB HD.

some of the viruses these days don't allow malwarebytes to run so you have to rename the .exe to something other than the installer.

you can name it whatever you want.

Mac's cost more and do not offer nearly the programs or options that are available for PC's.

Macs have plaenty of issues on thier own but there are not even 5% of macs vs PC's so they are never heard from.

Enjoy your mac and stay out of the PC discussion.

Pete,

I work for an ISP out here in Vegas and would advise starting with the free Windows Defender with the latest updates. Since you have a typical spyware running, it should have no problem taking care of it and if updated, keeping you relatively clean. It isn't as good as the pay companies (mcafee, norton, etc) but it is free and run by Microsoft.

Just an idea, but as mentioned above, a spyware will usually attach itself to the type of browser used when it was originally installed, so more times then not you can just install a different browser (mozilla firefox, apple safari, google chrome) and temporarily avoid the issues while you get things cleaned up.

Here is the link to Defender http://www.microsoft.com/windows/produc ... fault.mspx

Feel free to contact me if you need any assistance.

Oh really? You're about to hear from one now who's never had issues.

Thank you for the compliment--I love making people laugh and I do enjoy my VIRUS-FREE MAC every day!!!
What's even funnier is I build my own MACS, so it doesn't really cost me that much. Even the average Joe could get a killer deal on a MAC if they did a little research. Funnier still, is that in the long run, PC users usually pay for their "over-priced" calculator at least 3 times during it's lifespan due to repairs. Now THAT'S FUNNY!

It's too bad people don't have open minds. Do you enjoy going to the movies? Ever heard of Pixar Studios? All MAC driven. Enjoy superior quality graphics? You won't get anything better than from a MAC. Been to Smog 'n Go lately? They're running MACS.

PC's may run more programs, but their architecture is driven by GREED.

Drrakkruz, You are way too funny

I suppose Apple does not make a nickle on thier over priced machines or music players?? (they are not greedy at all huh) and Pixar was founded by Mr Apple himself so no surprise there.

FYI all I have ever owned were PC's and guess what I have never had a problem or virus either. Guess I am just the lucky one!!!

Oh Mac this and PC that. It should be Mac this and Windows that. A PC can run other operating systems than M$.

Run Linux and dont ever worry again!

As far as getting rid of that virus you can go to Symantecs website and search for a way to remove it. They have some info on it.

Alsao go out and download AVG anti-virus. IT'S FREE so no excuse.

LoL, the guy talking crap about PC's is telling you to open your mind. That's funny. The reason that I'll NEVER own a MAC is because every hippy-tree-hugging-obama-loving-berkeley-residing-hippy-moron owns one. That's reason enough right there just to stay the hell away.

I've never had a problem with any of my PC's, and see no reason what so ever to pay for some over-priced computer. You build them yourself to save money? I guess if I was a computer geek, I'd do the same. The time you spend building your MAC, I'll spend fishing. Have fun. The iPhone and iPod are the closest I'll ever get to owning an Apple computer.

Hope you get the virus taken care of.

Andy,
That's no way to talk about the commander-in-chief. Now as for the Mac vs. PC issue my dad is hard core PC guy never liked the Mac OS and I felt the same way because he did. I report to my CG public affairs unit we have Macs and PCs in the office. The PCs are our standard workstations the Macs are our workhorses we have 6 laptops and 2 mac pros they were in operation since before hurricane katrina (keep in mind I'm stationed in New Orleans) they ran our entire public affairs mission in response to Katrina across the Gulf Coast and ran like champs till we replaced them because current software didn't work on them and a CG wide mandate came out that Public Affairs offices across the country would run 09 Macbook Pros and 09 Mac pros. (Those old macs were transferred to other units and the CG Aux) I bought a macbook and took it home my dad was impressed by it.

What do we do on our macs? Edit High res video, photos, graphic design, writing, layout and design of a magazine. Videos are edited right in iMovie which comes standard on every Mac. I've had 20 high resolution photos open in Photoshop CS4 plus a multilayer graphic plus a video being compressed for web in high resolution fire fox open with 4 windows iTunes playing music and and was transferring video archives to a 20 TB RAID external HD, Bog down? Hardly noticeable crash? NOPE. Those computers and my personal one have never had any viruses, worms, malware etc. on them. Worst we had happen on one of the Katrina survivor macs was a Hard Drive failure but thats expected when you run a computer 24-7 for 5+ years and Mac doesn't make the actual hard drive so you cant blame them either and with the invention and commercialization of solidstate hard drives thats a non issue.

I'm not saying PCs are trash or useless they are great for gaming. As far as programs available for Windows computers vs Mac OS computers is also quickly becoming a non issue because of their recent popularity. But I digress :)

Yeah, they just rule everyday America. DUDE, What are you smokin' ? Have you seen our America lately? Just not the same since Gates made a machine that resembles a piece of Swiss Cheese to rule our country now, is it?

And just to have some more fun (since we are all here to have fun), here are two of my favorite MAC commercials--BROKEN PROMISES AND TEETER TOTTERING, for your viewing pleasure:

THESE COMMERCIALS ROCK!!!!

I read and contributed to this thread last night just to try and share my computer life experiences and maybe help a brother out. I come back to the thread tonight and WTF. I can almost here the lynch mobs torches burning and the pitchforks clanging. Never a dull moment on the WB, I fished for 9 hrs and come home and got my dose of drama for the day. Good luck with your PC bro. OKAY FLAME ON.

My next PC on its way

Could run Windoze on one stripe raid setup for silly games and Mac on a second stripe raid setup for work. Might upgrade the video and get 2 more gb of ram. Good huh?
