Xtool vs Cul-m-rite, looking for some advice before I buy one. Thanks.

smart cull is my favorite.

we weight the fish on the buoy set the weight and your done.

the buoys let you dial in the weight,

best way I have found!

I agree xtool weight was allways less than actual fish weight.

Balance beam the way to go for me. Cant stand the fact that I weigh the same fish twice and come up with two different weights. Makes you doubt everything you have in the live well

I like the cul-m-rite. I get tired of catching fish in the delta that have big tears under there mouth from people who dont treat there fish very good.

my cull-m-rite sucked at shasta, ended up just using a balance beam at one point. when they are all showing 1.95-2.15 then its time to put them on the beam anyways!

So i think ill leave the scale at home next week and just go with a beam. might seem like its going to take more time up front but i think it will be faster in the long run.

Ardent Smart Cull
Salter Digital Scale
Small fish on the passenger side
Better ones on the drivers side
Beam them if they're close
Sharpen the points on the buoys with a metal file (no rips in the lip)

hang the cull um rite upside down after turning it on. should read in the .60's.

oh yea replace the cull um right hook with a sharpened buoy hook

I just purchased a cul-em-rite and love it. I've used it at Clear Lake, Don Pedro and Mc Clure. At Mc Clure it sure saved me time culling fish without a doubt. I love this thing

At first I always used a balance beam but even a balance beam that has been used often becomes heavy on one side. The center hole becomes worn then weighs heavy on one side. I've went through three balance beams and spent more money for the balance beam with the level on it. I never trusted a digital scale until now. The cull-em-rite scale is expensive at $200 but it has already paid for it self in tournaments. I really love this scale.

At Mc Clure with all those spots that weigh between 1.00 lbs to 1.50 lbs using a balance beam takes to much time away from fishing during tournaments. With the cul-em-rite I would just weigh each fish as we caught them. When culling I would test the smallest fish to make sure the cul-em-rite scale was right and so far the scale has been right on. Love this new scale

I weighed our biggest fish before we weighed in for our tournament and the cull-em-rite scale was exactly the same as what the TD scale said. A Mc Clure whopping 1.75 lbs PIG. Did I say I love my new scale?

Another thing I love about this new scale of mine is the total weight it shows you. When you go to the scale at a tournament you know exactly what you have before you weigh in. O ya did I say I love my new scale?

As for the other scale you're asking about, I have never used one.

I use a mix of both. I love the cul-em-rite scale (BUT hated the floats that came with em so i bought the smart bouys and the combo is really easy to work with IMO.

I've been using the x-tools system and like it. For me it has been accurate and efficient. I can weigh a fish 3-4 times and it reads the same everytime. It always seems to weigh similarly to the tournament scale. I really like how it culls for you.

I use a very reliable scale that weighs the same each time(thats all you can ask for from what ever company/brand). Then pair that up with the Smart Cull balls and game over. I also have a balance beam with level ball to get the same/very close bass culled out. BTW, my scale goes by tenths of an ounce(1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and so on to 1.9, 2.0).

After 6 or 7 years the battery died. I sent it in to cull-em rite. I think it was $50. The unit came back with a new battery, he said it was calibrated, and the decals had been replaced. It's been as good as new since.

My X-tools works just fine. It may not weigh identical to what the tournament scales are registered for (then again it may - depends on who is zeroing the scales

) but it certainly is consistent with weights for me... if it is a dinkfest with lots of fish of identical weights, then it may be best to use the beam. If the fish are varying by more than a couple of ounces then it is very worthwhile IMHO.

I'll be glad to pick yours up Harry - give me an address and a time for trash pickup and I'll dig it out for a spare!

Berkley TEC culling system is great.

You can change the battery yourself, totally water proof, extremley accurate, automatically culls and comes with wax pen and tablet, and no harm cull clips. I had a cul-em-rite and that thing is a pain and expencive for what you get and the one I had, I had to erase culled fish myself, the bekley TEC does it for me.

Really works well and is always on the money, even with small fish.

I have both, X tools and the Cul m rite. Cul M rite is a little more pricey but blows my xtools out of the water. I still keep a balance beam in my boat just in case you get those fish that are like .01 or .02 apart. Just to be safe.

I have had both. The head of the xtools got loose over time and found it will drop small fish very easily. Also, it is not very consistent on weight. It can vary by several ounces.

I have found I like the Culmrite because it is in decimal rather than lbs/oz. It allows it to be more accurate.

I did use the weigh stick tops of the Xtools (they float and have numbers on them) and attached them to the Culmrite LifeTags. I don't like putting holes in the fish.

Whether it matches the scale during weigh in is irrelevant really, as long as I know which fish to properly cull. The weight is pretty close to the weighmaster's scale and that is good enough for me.

I think you'll be real happy with that berkley,I've had nothing but problems with the cull m rite.I purchased the berkley scale and kit about 2 months ago and love it.Very accurate but takes some getting use to.Good luck......

Used the X-tools and hated it. I was afraid to tell the weighmaster how much weight I had because the scale was so innacurate. Bought the Cul m rite and love it. We usually weigh within hundredths of what our official weight is.

Don't throw away a balance beam that's become worn and inaccurate.
Tie two identicals weights, like new water bottles, one on each end, and file off some of the aluminum on the heavy end, until it's even again.

Hey Scott,
How did the Xtools 'no holes' float clips work? Do they have enough clamping pressure to lift fish out of the well? I know, prob can't lift a toad, but how big a fish can it lift?

I get tired of punching holes in the fishes lips too! Any other feedback on good 'no holes' clips?

No you can't lift the fish with the x tool floats. In fact, they're usually floating around the live well without fish on them at the end of the day. The scale is horrible too. I could weigh the same fish 3 or 4 times and get a variance of up to 1/2 POUND ! Absolutely useless. I liked the idea of the clip on floats but they just didn't stay on the fish.
