Helpful Cleaning Tip

Post by Tony B »

After summertime fishing I can't help but notice that all my life jackets seem to have sunscreen residue around the necks. This morning I decided to run a couple of tests to see what the best methods & products were going to be the best to get this "gunk" off.

Now, I'm sure results will vary with the type of sunscreen that you use, but for those of you whom use "Bull Frog and/or Coppertone Sport" this is what I found out... on a scale of 1-10 (10 the best).

1. Regular dish soap = 3
2. Tooth paste = 4
3. Goo be gone = 6
4. Gasoline = 1
5. Carb cleaner = 1 (this usually works on anything LOL)
6. Go-Jo hand cleaner = 8 This worked the best for me

Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks-

Liquid tide... it's concentrated and pretty much gets out anything. I use it to get out grease, etc after working on the car/boat. Put it on a sponge and rub the stain out. Wash with the hose on the front lawn.

I was a Whitewater raft guide for five years and we had to wash almost a couple hundred life jackets at a time. We used a large trash can with Laundry detergent. The detergent is designed to break down human and synthetic oils. On your list you had things like gasoline, any petroleum product will dramatically deteroiate your life vest becasue they too are synthetic and will over time dissolve.
