Post by jigginpig »

would anyone having experience with BOTH of these baits be willing to describe the differences?

I can only speak for the old weedslinger (not the new weighted one) but they are a good bait. The trick to the old ones (any maybe the new ones) is to rig them with a Gamakatsu G-Mag and bend the hookpoint out a little bitm or else they bite into the plastic too much.

Mission fish, another good bait. I didn't throw them alot, but I knew plenty of people who did. Definietly a great "jigging swimbait" working along the bottom and around heavy cover.

Mickey advocates tweaking the bend, either kirbed or reversed, on the misson fish. i also feel that would be a good trick for the weedslinger, due to its similar configuration.

what would you say is the big difference in the actions of the two baits? as far as pitch/roll, tail kick, etc?

thanks for the reply.

There are many differences.

1. Paint/appearance

2. The Weedslinger rolls side to side along with the tail kicking

3. Weedslinger WAY more durable

4. Price

thanks for the feedback. sounds like the weedslinger might be better for dirty water? i saw a video of the weedslinger and it looked like it had a lot of body roll. i was kinda looking for that.

any issues with the bait not tracking?

Mission fish comes in 4 different sizes; 4", 5", 6" & 8", Weed Slinger 6".
Roboworms 5" Swimbait and Black Dogs 6" Weed Slinger are very similar in action. The original Megabait LA Slider 6" & 7" is also good if you can find them.

I agree that the original LA Sliders are about as good as they get! Color hasn't ever been much of an issue...its the action thats so good on these baits.

I have fished each of them lots.

The NEW weed slinger is the way to go. Here's why.
1. The colors are better
2. The hook up ratio is at least 2x better than the mission fish.
3. The Weed Slinger lasts a LOT longer... and for many more fish. Even with Mend-It - the Mission Fish is good for only 1 or 2 fish then its scrap. The tails work well on the back of an AC plug though.
4. I like the action on the weed slinger better most of the time, but there are different times for different actions
5. The Weed Slinger has a better more realistic profile.

With that said - the mission fish was a true innovation for swimbaits - but, now there are so many that IMHO are better. Weed Slinger, Keitech, Basstrix, Roboworm EZ Shad, Top Shelf Minnow, etc. etc.

Just my opinion - hope it helps!

The Mission Fish to me, is like tossing a Frog, great innovative bait, draws a lot of strikes, yet the hook up to fish in the boat ratio is very poor. I hate missing fish that bust my lures! Hence I personally have never been fond of these hollow body swimbaits where that giant hook is buried in the plastic. Granted, it does make for a better option at times and allows ya to fish it in the weeds and other heavy cover. Ultimately though, ya still have a poor hook up percentage. Aaron Martins won a BASS on Clearlake tossing this bait, so in the hands of the right angler, it can be effective. For the average and weekend angler, it can be a heart breaker.

The Black Dog Weed Slinger, is definately a more durable bait, has much better action in the water, better color patterns as TomL mentions and actually better allows you to position the hook so that it can be more exposed above the back. The tougher material doesn't tear as easily and that hook will remain in an exposed position.

When it comes to plastic paddle tail swimbaits, I definately prefer those that are fished on a giant lead head jig with a big exposed hook. Far greater hook up ratio and fish in the boat! Biggest choice differential for me, a single Mission Fish can run from 10.99-14.99. You get 2 Weed Slingers, for $13.99!

word. that is what i was after, thanks a ton. i am on unemployment, going to school, so bread is very thin at this time...

Tom, i thought i was theonly fool that would glue dead misson fish onto hardbaits... i use slammers... good stuff.

i am planning to take a trip to Alan Henry, and the mesquite is a real issue. looks like the weedslinger fits for several reasons. we dont have much wood in my area, but the coontail can get real thick in places.

i am working on a bait for personal production, but you know how that goes. two steps foward...
