Reel Speed for Spinnerbaits?

Post by Lugnut »

Just looking for recommendations on Reel Speed for throwing Spinnerbaits. I currently have a Curado 5 to 1 on my Powell Spinnerbait rod but was thinking maybe something a little faster would be more versatile. (FYI - I have a 7 to 1 on my Dobyns Buzzbait Rod - which is the same specs as my Powell)

I have 6:1 and it works for me, but then again I just got my first 7:1 reel this year. I use the same rod for my buzzbaits as I do with my blades.

In my opinion the average 6.3:1 or so is ideal. If you have to high a retrieve speed, the lure will skip out of the water, If your too slow the bass get too good a look at it. The 5:1 would be okay if you only slow rolled the lure on the bottom, but faster is better so you can keep the fish hooked up , just like spoons need a fast retrieve once hooked.

I'm not really a believer in slower reels, even for Cranks, I had a 3.8:1 Curado, and wasn't impressed.....but I love my 7.3 :1 Diawas.

If you are undiciplined like me, the 5:1 is fine. I have a 5:1 Curado on my spinnerbait rod. The slower reel allows me to reel as fast as I want and still keep the bait in the strike zone. I rarely burn a spinnerbait so I have no need for a faster reel. If you need to burn the blade then put in on your buzz bait rod.

Thanks guys, I was thinking what Mike stated. The set-up is fine, as is.

Discipline is a must when using a fast reel for spinnerbaits. You wouldn't believe how many anglers tell me their spinnerbait won't run deep - what's the problem. Then I find out they're using a high speed 7-something reel. Blades can be downsized to compensate for the lift, however it's at the cost of vibration. You can also squeeze the upper and lower arms together, so the blades run closer to the head, to make the bait perform better at high speed. Just be aware that doing so repeatedly will eventually weaken the "R" bend and cause the wire to fail there.
