wakebait rods/swimbait rods

Post by BASSTUD »

I have the bigger baits ( wake jr and hudds) covered, but when throwing the smaller wake baits and swimbaits ( slammers, big hammers, bass trix, mission fish etc) what am i looking for? I have been useing one of my flippin rods for all these, but now i need to pick up a rod for these baits so i can free up my flippin rod. Wake baits having trebbles and swimbaits having a single hook, can i get one rod for both these baits? What about the walking baits like punkers, do I need another rod for these? The closest thing i have now is like i said a flippin rod, and a Powell 7'5"754cb heavy mod-fast act. One more thing, is the fast action tip the stiffer tip? Thanks in advance.

Go for the 795 SBMT. This will be a GREAT choice for wake baits, missionfish ect. and is MADE for baits like the punker. This will be more of a versatile rod for what you have described and will cover all of that no problems! I hope this helps!

You might also consider the Dobyns 735. It is listed as a XFast action but it has enough tip for all those baits. IMO, it really isn't a XFast when compared to other mfg. I was using this rod all Fall for 6" Injected Punkers & Big Hammer baits with decent success. I also hooked up a few fish using the 6" Bull Shad & 7" MS Slammer.

On using one rod for single hook & treble hook swimbaits, I have found I landed a larger percentage of fish by not buttoning down the drag too tight.

I have been playing with the Zillion 7'4" swimbait stick lately. So far so good. I think I might actually prefer it over my 795 SB ML. I need more time on the water with different baits to be sure though.

Thanks for the input guys but the Dobyns are a lil too expensive for me, was hoping i could get something cheaper, around the 160.00 range?

Then maybe an Okuma in a MH action 7'6" or 7'11" Powells are still close to your price range I always try to find rods used if I can. Watch the classifieds or place a WTB ad. You might luck out.

As suggested above a Dobyns 735C will work fine for those baits and the 6in punkers. Gary has come out with a new line of rods in your price range. The Dobyns SS (Savy Series) 735C retails for 169$. The should be out in stores pretty soon! Here is a link to the Tackle Tour product preview of the rods!

The whole thing is you get what you pay for. Especially with fishing equipment. I have learned this over the years. You get what is good for you and learn to adapt that to many baits in one or two or three rods.

Personally, I don't use a high dollar rod for wakebaits and I don't use the same rod for smaller single hook swimmers as I do for wakebaits. For 7" wakebaits like Slammers, AC Minnow, and 3:16 Baby Bass, I use a Diawa Heartland with an Ambassador 6500 reel. I've hooked and landed fish to 7 lbs on this combo with 20 lb mono. It seems to have the perfect amount or lack of tip for these baits. It struggles with a full 9" Slammer or a full size 3:16 Wake bait but it can get it out there. They don't cost a ton but for this purpose they suit me. For the smaller single hook ones, I'll agree with everyone else and suggest a Powell or Dobyn's 735 or 736.
