Chatter Bait 101

Post by GITBIT »

This is a new bait to me. Could some of you give your opinion of how someone new to the bait should get started? What are the basic must haves to start an arsenal of chatter baits and trailers? Don't want to waste money on junk I don't need.

Thanks,

Mike

Get your self a few colors and a few sizes of the Revenge Viberator. http://www.revengebaits.com/products/display/?id=40 My three favorite colors are Shad, PMS(purple metallic shad,) and Bluegill. I use either a zoom fluke or a swim senko as a trailer. I use the albino and green pumpkin zoom or a green pumpking swim senko. Obviously match these to color of your bait. I have had my best luck throwing them where and when you would throw a spinnerbait.

A good bait that I don't throw enough.
I really like the Gambler SwimBlades (don't think they make them anymore). They don't seem to be the most durable, but they perform well.

Only need one trailer - Strike King Denny Brauer Chunk

I like to throw the 1/2 oz mainly in the white colors (white only, white/chartruese, white/red, shad, etc.).

I use to throw the original Chatterbaits and some of the other ones until I found a guy on eBay that makes custom "chatter jigs" for me for about 1/2 of the price (includes shipping). He uses reflective tape on his blades and his trailer can take a beating. My first trip using one of his custom "chatter jigs", I caught over 10 bass (including a 6 lber) on that one lure.

The original Chatterbaits by Z are crap IMHO the hooks are horrible and need to be sharpened with a grinder. There are some great hobbieset chatterbaits out there and Gambler did make a top notch one same with Voodoo.

As for trailer, experement with them Paca chunk, fish trap, paddel tail, etc...

D&M Piranha swim jig

Post by Larry Hemphill »

I have been using this bait for the past year or so, mostly at night but also early and late in the day. I have tested 6 or 7 brands in my pool, and while the original Chatterbait is very good, the D&M has the best water movement - in my opinion. I wrote an article about that bait in the last issue of the Bass Angler's Guide. You might want to check it out. I, too, like the swim Senko as a trailer, but also a 5 or 6 inch Yamamoto single grub trailer, or a small Basstrix minnow. Smelly Jelly too! If Bob Higgins at Limit Out Tackle recommended the D&M - it must be good - and it is!!

I was waiting on Mr. Hemphill to post on this subject. He has written a couple of very informative articles on this one.

I just spent time with Dale the owner of D&M baits and there Piranha Swim Jig is awsome! They have this bait done right with a 5/0 Gamkatsu hook and the right colors. As far as fishing this bait I recomend 2 ways

Slow roll the bait back to the boat and hang on.

Also snap your rod tip and pause in between snaps this creates a radical zig zag motion and changes the direction of the bait.
This triggers feeding response!

You have to figure out how they want it the day your fishing.

Colors Green pumkin, white, black and blue thats all you need.
try different plastic trailers till you find what you likie.

Also they make a Piranha super mag swim jig with a 8/0 Gamakatsu hook for big plastic trailers!

Hope this helps

Ok, this is by far one of my favorite baits but keep in mind that I

don't fish tournaments nor do I have the skills that most of the

guys in this forum have. But, with that being said, I have nailed

some of my biggest fish in the last yr on this bait. I gave it a

try one day out at a local lake when the stripers were feeding on

the shad that they had pushed to the surface. the bait was fairly

small and they wouldn't touch the big baits and I couldn't make the

cast distance with the small baits. So, I took the 3/8 chatterbait

(white) and matched up w/fluke trailer and tore off the skirt.

First cast, Nailed a 8lbr, and proceeded to get 8 more fish out of

that school in the next half hr all in open water! Since then, I've

experimented with colors and trailers and sizes and target just the

largemouths. My best setup by far is a 3/8 wt. pearl white/silver

flake, chrome plate, with a basstrix trailer, (attached

securely, lol). sometimes a slow, steady roll back to the boat, or

all out winding as fast as I can. One thing for sure, when they eat

it, they are stuck everytime! Biggest striper so far, lake skinner

18lbs! biggest largemouth, undisclosed lake, 10lbs even, both on

the chatterbait hope that helps.
