Best DD-22 rod?

Post by DougH »

What's the best rod for throwing the 22's?
Should it be all glass?

Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

I would have to say the Dobyns 805CB RM. Randy McAbee designed that rod for those. It cast those a mile. Hope this helps.

I have very good success with the Kistler LTX 7'6" Heavy. Very fast tip, but enough back bone to bite back when its time to drive the hooks. I use glass rods for cranking light cranks and some square bills, but I have found a stiffer rod works better for the big cranks with big hooks. Don't forget about a low gear ratio reel like a 5:1 ratio. I really like tossing my big deep cranks with the Zillion 4:9. Good luck!!

I don't own the 805cb RM but for purely casting the D22's and similar deep divers, it would have to be choice#1. Also the 705cb and I believe they advertise a new 7'6" for 2010 that is also a randy macabee design are serious contenders. Dobyn's makes a fine product.

so far I've thrown the macabee rod and LOVE it. haven't got a fish on it to tell but it does make fishing the DD22 effortless to fish!

I have used the lamiglass Skeet Reese 765 for the past 4 years and LOVE that as well for the 22's.

wow! so many votes for the 805CB RM !

Does anyone in Ventura carry them, or would it be best to order from somebody?

Thanks for all the opinions guys, usually there are so many choices that everyone spits out, it's still a crapshoot, but this time, I think I found a clear-cut favorite..

Without a doubt Dobyns Rod. Visit his site at dobynsrods.com. He has a break down of what the rod components are, as well as, spec's on each of the 73 rods available. You can always contact them via phone at 513-671-1989 and speak to Richard and sometimes Gary on any questions you might have. Hope this helps and enjoy your new Dobyns Rod.

Hands down the Dobyns 805CB RM dominates the DD technique.

I haven't had the opportunity to try any of the Dobyn's rods so I can only tell you that I've used the loomis CBR845C and CBR847C and caught numerous fish on them. They both worked well. Recently I picked up a used CBR906C and plan to give it a try. Maybe I can get a little more distance out of my casts.

Too bad there isn't a way to try before you buy with rods????

I believe you can with Dobyns Rods! You can rent rods and try them then buy them when returning rentals (- your rental cost I think)!!! :D Contact Dobyns Rods for participating Dealers

What other lures and/or techniques is the 805CB good for? I've been eying this rod for some time, but don't throw DD22s and the like a whole lot, although it's something I've really wanted to get into for post-spawn and Summer bass.

I would say small swimbaits...Mission fish, Hollow Bellies, Basstrix...Stuff like that...But if thats to much for you, I would say the Dobyns 764CB RM. You can throw DD 22's on them, and small swimbaits...Just depends on you.

Any crank bait, rattle trap, jerbait. Spinneerbait or small swinbaits. Its made for the bigger cranks tho.

It looks like I'm going to be the odd ball here but i use the KVD 7'10" Launcher for DD22's. I can through them a long ways and the rod is very sensitive.

Dobyns 805cb is awesome... with a Revo Stx and 10lb flouro I can throw a DD22 a country mile.... I have the Powell 703cb glass and it is awesome as well, but I like it for my lipless cranks.
Heck, POWELL BASS RODS WERE DESGINED BY GARY ANYWAYS...

I've never fished the Dobyns rods, but I throw my DD cranks and any other similiar reactions on a Phenix X12 or X10 crank stick..
It works pretty good...

Also be on the lookout for the NEW ALL "Glass" stick coming out soon.. That red rod I was using in the Wick $10,000 fish video is that new rod and I LOVE IT!
