Trolling Motor Up Grade
Trolling Motor Up Grade
I am considering a trolling motor up grade and not sure what to get. right now running a Minn Kota Maxxum 74 but thinking of going to Maxxum or Fortex 80 or 101. Only have a 18ft boat so not sure the 101 is really needed.
Any input or suggestions>??????

Re: Trolling Motor Up Grade
unless you fish alot of current or camp and fish with limited charging ops. Go with 24 volt less cost on batteries and weight in the boat 80lbs is plenty thrust usually.
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!
Re: Trolling Motor Up Grade
You can get by on 82# , but 101# is better if and when you need that extra power like on a windy day or in the delta with a strong tide. It depends if there's room on your boat for that extra battery.

Hey Jeff,
If you are going to consider the 101...I have a buddy that has one for sale with the universal sonar built in for $500, which I think is a good deal based on the cost new and his works perfect. Let me know if your interested.

Re: Trolling Motor Up Grade
Hi Jeff,
The 80 is fine for that size boat. The Fortrex is an awesome motor.
The iPilot does not work with the Fortrex...it requires the electronic pedal and the Fortrex is a manual with cables. Sorry!
Stay with your 24V system and you will be good to go.
If you have any questions on the MinnKota, let me know!

36v on an 18' Ranger is the way to go. I had one on my 461 and loved it. You can chase schooling fish and cut across coves with ease. Jeff if you would just get back on your diet you could make up for the extra battery
Ur welcome

You SACK Brad, hahaha j/k. Yea if I could get back on track with diet, new job doesn't give me any time for working out any more. Yea I hear you on chasing the schoolies. I am considering the 101 but not sure yet.

101 LB. Go with the gusto. 80 is fine for most conditions including stable weather. However, add current and wind and you'll wish you had more power like Scottie the Star Trek engineer. Like the other guy said, chasing schoolies and cutting across coves are another big plus for the bigger motor.

With the 101, you can even pull Sancho on skis when he falls in.
