As we know, it's about the WATER & $$$$$
A renewable resource that has fueled the West Coast economy for hundreds of years, CA DELTA CHINOOK SALMON is on the verge of EXTINCTION. The CA Delta is the largest estuary on the western side of the world and nourishes the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to Canada. The threat to the salmon is the diversion of fresh water from the CA Delta,
the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers entering the ocean through the SF Bay. The
amount of water diverted from the CA Delta has increased exponentially over the past 8 years. When too much
water is removed from the Delta, the entire ecosystem breaks down. Evidence of the beginning stages of this process is the radically low #
of Delta smelt and salmon over the past 5 years. The entire ecosystem from phytoplankton, smelt, sturgeon, steelhead, shad, salmon, striped bass, largemouth bass, etc. will be gone forever unless action is taken immediately.
To put this into human terms; what if 50% of the air was
"diverted" from our atmosphere. How would that affect life on earth?
The salmon fishing closure in 2008 and 2009 has cost the CA economy $1.4 billion and 23,000 jobs. http://www.asafishing.org/newsroom/news_pr081009.htmlThe closure has affected Oregon immensely, as well. The devastation is massive. This issue affects both states. The CA Delta Chinook Salmon swim from Santa Barbara to Canada and these fish support commercial fishing, sport fishing, boat building, gear manufacturers /
retailers, tourism, and many other supporting industries in CA and OR. The other fish in the Delta, such as largemouth bass, striped bass, smallmouth bass, and catfish support a vibrant Delta economy that isn't included in these figures.
Hopefully you're asking the questions; Who is behind this threat? What can I do to help?
Here's my explanation in a nutshell: Approximately 12 families control all of the agriculture in the arid San Joaquin Valley. Taxpayer subsidized water (from the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers) fuels their business. This subsidized water is used not only to grow water intensive crops such as cotton, alfalfa, and almonds in the 105 degree heat; but it ALSO fills massive aquifers. Unregulated groundwater provides the opportunity for these "farmers" to re-sell or "broker" the water for a 1000% mark-up to LA, OC, The Inland Empire, and the CA Desert. Agriculture is nothing but a front for their water brokerage businesses. Guess what? They want more water!!!!
They have pillaged the San Joaquin River and the the Sacramento River via the Delta over the past 30 years. This hasn't been enough. They now have their eyes on a DIRECT LINK to the Sacramento River!!!! These politically powerful groups have lobbied Arnold Schwarzenegger and multiple state politicians to build a 500 foot wide "Peripheral Canal" from Sacramento to Tracy AT THE EXPENSE OF THE TAXPAYERS! It will be the same size and scale as the PANAMA CANAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This canal will be the end of the ecosystem.
They're cooking up disasters and spreading lies, such as "Fish vs. Food, The Delta is Broken, Congress Created Dustbowl, and The Big Gulp Theory" in order to push the Peripheral Canal as the solution. The cost to taxpayers is $15 - $25 billion MINIMUM!!!! The real figure is more like $50 - $100 billion. Last time I checked our state was broke. There are multiple solutions to water scarcity in CA. The
Peripheral Canal is the most expensive and devastating "solution" of all.

Please take action unless you want your CA tax dollars to line the pockets of a few billionaires at the expense of the environment and coastal economies of CA and OR.
What can YOU do to help?
1. Visit http://www.restorethedelta.org to learn more about the subject. Talk it over with friends and family.
2. Vote NO on the 2010 Water Bond if you're a CA resident.
3. Donate to www.restorethedelta.org. As little as $5 will help. THIS IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. Restore the Delta is a truly grassroots organization without major corporate sponsors. Their work will spread the word through the State Capitol and major media outlets. Please donate whatever makes sense.
There will be MASSIVE MEDIA BLITZ pushing the Peripheral Canal starting this summer. Please understand the issue and spread the word. Restore the Delta needs your help to fight the good fight.

Cal water "free-market" politics
Start with this one! In California Water - Free Market Politics, the author
points out that California had a $12 billion surplus which swung quickly to
a $20 billion deficit, largely as the result of Pete Wilson's ENERGY
DEREGULATION - privatization boondoggle. The point I take from this is this
de-regulation of services that are PUBLIC GOOD NECESSITIES (WATER AND ENERGY
ARE NATURAL MONOPOLIES), is that we end up "nationalizing costs and losses,
and privatizing profits". The public gets screwed badly every time.

Re: As we know, it's about the WATER & $$$$$
Then read the Sasha's Limousine Liberals article. This goes into the sale
for $5,200 per acre-foot of water (they don't truly own) to the Mojave Water
Agency in San Bernardino county. The breaking article I put on my News page
here: http://www.stopcanal.org/node/58
How Limousine Liberals, Water Oligarchs and Even Sean Hannity Are
Hijacking Our Water Supply
http://www.alternet.org/water/144020/ho ... er_oligarc
Finally read the Looming Water Disaster. After this your head may explode.
Don't worry about getting a perfect knowledge about this stuff, Bobby. A
working knowledge is all you need. Know that we cannot let Diane Feinstein
help her billionaire donor STUART RESNICK - THE MAN FUNDING THE AB 1253 and
AB 2336 to Kill STRIPERS AND LMB - so he and his pals the Westlands water
district, the LA MET and some private investors can finally have no
restrictions on taking subsidized (cheap) water deliveries with no
restrictions on what they do with it!! Right now they use the Kern Water
Bank to play games with paper water rights to make millions, but this is
just a warm up act.
What is not fully addressed in these articles is what Westlands is trying to
do on their end. Westlands and the San Luis Unit contractors of the Central
Valley Project are trying to take control of the CVP (which is federal and
controlled by the Bureau of Reclamations, a highly corrupted organization -
just like our State Water Resources Control Board and related agencies -
all controlled by ex water contractors in a game of musical chairs). They
specifically seek PERMANENT RIGHT TO PUCHASE SUBSIDIZED WATER FROM CVP (ie
cheap or practically free) WITH NO RESTRICTIONS ON WHAT THEY DO WITH THE
WATER, AND FORGIVEMENT OF THEIR $500 MILLION OWED TO US TAX PAYER FOR THEIR
SHARE OF THE CVP WE BUILT FOR THEM IN THE EARLY 1960s - IN EXCHANGE FOR
WESTLANDS TAKING OVER RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEALING WITH THE SAN LUIS UNIT
DRAIN. More on this verbally, but know that they will never deal with the
drain issue because they will just begin winding down agriculture and start
selling water to urban users. This was the master plan all along. This is
why Westlands allowed the planting of permanent crops in the last decade.
They knew they would use it as a huge prop in a play to fool the public that
to take the water away would be to make them cut down trees...... ATTACHED
is the PDF copy of a letter signed my Friends of the Trinity River, CSPA,
C-Win and others to US Dept of Interior under Secretary David Hayes about
the San Luis Drain issue. I have highlighted the sections for you.
Note that Stuart Resnick (who controls the Kern Water Authority and the Kern
Water Bank through the illegal hijacking that stole it from CA in the
Monterey Accord meetings), also owns like 150,000 acres in the Westlands!)

There are plenty of politicians on both sides that have been bought off by business interests to exploit the Delta.

Re: Letter from Costa to Gov Arnie!
Stewart Resnick has a track record of buying off politicians and trampling on the rights of citizens.
He recently was able to "convince" Arnold and the State Ag Commisioner that the Apple Moth was an emergency.
They then sprayed the Monterey Peninsula for three nights running with a Checkmate, a chemical that just coincidentally happened to be made by one of Mr. Resnicks companies Suterra. This over the strenuous objections of the residents and City Governments.
It would have been against the law to spray farmworkers in the field with this stuff.
Within days my wife came down with pnuemonia and now has COPD chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
I'd love to stop him from rapeing the Delta.

Oakley rallies against bill targeting popular game fish
By Hannah Dreier
Contra Costa Times
Posted: 04/08/2010 07:13:37 PM PDT
Updated: 04/08/2010 07:13:37 PM PDT
OAKLEY — A state bill that takes aim at Delta striped bass is raising hackles here.
The popular game fish has become a target of Delta water exporters who blame stripers for the demise of endangered species like salmon and Delta smelt. The so-called Striped Bass Predation Bill, which will be heard in committee next week, would require the newly established Delta Stewardship Council to consider ridding the Delta of non-native predator fish.
"The striped bass is a publicly owned resource," said longtime Oakley resident and California Striped Bass Association member Roger Mammon. "Fishing is big business, and if the fishing goes away, that business isn't going to be there."
Among other things, the bill, introduced by Jean Fuller, R-Bakersfield, suggests ending protection of striped bass habitat in the Delta and removing all restrictions on the size and number of bass that may be taken.
"Maybe there are solutions to help the salmon and the Delta smelt other than completely shutting off water that is going out of the Delta," Fuller spokesman Nick Kump said.
A coalition of environmentalists, fishing enthusiasts and Delta residents is mobilizing against the bill. They note that striped bass have successfully coexisted with other species in the Delta estuary for more than a century, and argue that the real cause of the ecological crisis facing the region is massive water exportation.
"Fish used to coexist until we started taking water out of the Delta," Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla of Restore the Delta said.
The striped bass fishing industry generates $250 million for the state each year, according to Mammon.
"It brings fishermen in from out of town to local marinas," he said. "They spend on gas to fill their vehicles; they buy lunches; hotels fill up when there are tournaments."
Some local fishing enthusiasts worry that the bill represents a slippery slope, and speculate that black bass could be next on the list.
"The intent is to fish out and destroy the striped bass population in the Delta," Oakley Councilman Bruce Connelly said. "It's outrageous. It's just flat-out outrageous to destroy an entire species."
The City Council adopted a resolution opposing the bill and sent a letter of opposition to the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee, which will consider the bill Tuesday.
Kump stressed that the bill does not require the stewardship commission to destroy the striped bass population, only to consider the adverse effect of exotic predators on native fish.
"The bill doesn't call for anything like eliminating the species right away," he said.
Jim Metropulos of the Sierra Club expects the Legislature to reject the bill to respect the independence of the fledgling stewardship council. Fuller introduced a similar bill last year with little success.
The local chapter of the California Striped Bass Association will be sending a school bus of striped bass supporters from Oakley and other Delta towns to Sacramento next week to make their voices heard.
Mammon, who spoke against Fuller's previous bill, will again join the convoy and express his opposition in Sacramento. Despite the failure of the last bill, Mammon still worries that this one may pass.
"Who knows," he said. "You're dealing with politicians."
He hopes that the Legislature will ultimately turn its attention from predator species to the larger issue of water exportation.
"Water is the habitat of fish, and you can't keep on taking the habitat," he said.
