Re: How to man handle a 275lb yellowfin
no clue how much it weighed, ive never broke a 100lbs on a yellowfin. Thats what the article claimed. Either way that is how you man handle a yellowfin.hawghustler wrote:Sweet video but that fish is no bigger than 150lbs. No way in hell they could of done that with a 275lb

275? Not. And what's with the fish just laying there? Ever seen a tuna hit the deck? It will rattle around for minutes. Weird video.
Re: How to man handle a 275lb yellowfin
This fish is approximately 275lbs. the length of an YFT at this weight is around 6ft in length. I have caught many YFT over two hundred and three hundred pounds. Some times you can get fish that are more football shaped rather than long and broad that will be the same weight. Most large tuna when on deck don’t flail around like smaller fish and albacore. They may kick around a little but not much.

Cooch thought it was 550 lbs

Re: How to man handle a 275lb yellowfin
I was a deckhand for quite a few years. Seen many many tuna hit the deck. When you get two dome shots with the gaff it kinda slows them down.pd wrote:275? Not. And what's with the fish just laying there? Ever seen a tuna hit the deck? It will rattle around for minutes. Weird video.

Looks staged to me, no life in the tuna after being nearly free gafted and hits the deck without color or no blood, very un tuna like behavior. The fish could 275 lbs, if the guys in the boat are 4 1/2' tall.
Did they ever show what was just outside of view on the other video? strange to have 1 giant tuna in the area without fish boiling on the cum line they has going.

Re: How to man handle a 275lb yellowfin
No way that was staged... the fly guy hooked up and had a fish running, then the way the guy reacted to the bamboo setup getting bit was totally natural. The gaff wounds were on the underside of the fish and it was probably bleeding .... but if they missed the gills it may not have been bleeding that much. Tuna that size are caught on handlines routinely all over the world...and much much bigger. Giant bluefin are caught on handlines. Handlines are the most efficient way to land a big fish, the rod/reel is actually a disadvantage over a handline (albeit safer for the angler). That fish is definitely over 200#.

Re: How to man handle a 275lb yellowfin
1 tuna? the fly guy is hooked up and this guy boats this one. Thats 2.
I am willing to bet there was more as well... and fyi.. those guys are tossing chunk bait over.. chunk bait sinks. When Tuna bust on the surface the have pushed live bait up not chunk bait. Chunk bait has a tendacy to sink. You can tell the fish are actively reacting to the chunk bait and there is quite a few because he went for the gig. You break out the gig when there a full on frenzy going on. The bigger guy was getting his handline ready to, for those who dont know the bucket with the rope the bigger guy was messing with is a handline another sign there was chaos beneath the surface.
Do some research on big tuna and handlines and gigs and you will see. I suggest some of you take a long range trip sometime and fish some water with some salt in it, it would be a learning experience to say the least.

The deckhand responsible for that duty was probably new and had performance anxiety. I wouldn't eat any tuna that boiled on it...Oldschool wrote:strange to have 1 giant tuna in the area without fish boiling on the cum line they has going.

Re: How to man handle a 275lb yellowfin
Been fishing Baja, Mag bay and Cabo for over 45 years and know a how the locals fish and have caught hundreds of tuna and marlin in Mexico...on rod & reel. Taking a second look, the fish comes to life in the ponga at the end of the video. You can see the fish in the water shortly after it's hooked. The fish was gaffed in the side of the head, not where it would bleed too much. The fly fisherman could have hooked on a small fish, not a big tuna.
Looks to me like they where cuming small cut bait, never got a look how the gigger pole was baited, that line was out before the video started.
Changed my mind and agree it looks real.
