Was watching WFN and two guy fishing surrounded by grizzly a black bear. I'd be to freaked. They were being as cautious as possible but still fishing, however, I'd want to make sure my fishing buddy couldn't run as fast as me. I just wouldn't fish around them.
Have any of you done it? If so, were you unnerved?

Ever fish with bears?

Re: Ever fish with bears?
Been to Alaska 26 trips and two we went to the Brooks river below lake Iliamna. That is a bear preserve and has 16 or so brown bears and cubs at any given time. Got tired of breaking off my fish so the bears could take them and ticked off a momma with cubs and she charged me across the stream and scared me good. We had little mini airhorns and were told we couldn't use them by the rangers. I caught a sockeye and bent down and the airhorn was inside the front of my waders and went off. About froze Winston off. It is tiring watching for those huge bears when they keep sneaking up on you in the high grass. Always take along someone with a leg or circulation problems.

Just last year in July went up to visit a friend that lives in Fairbanks, Alaska and we ended up taking a road trip up to the Russian River. Unbelievable how up close and personal we got with some of the bears. They weren't interested in us just the fish so we were thankfully overlooked. Also, fished the Talkeetna River also known as Clear Creek and there were tons of bears up there as well. I do have to say when you see a cub on the side of the road on any of the hwys and it seems to be alone DON'T pull over and pet it. hahaha!!! Some individuals thought it was lost or w.e and not 5 min somebody comes plowin around one of the cars on foot and was almost hit by another car screamin "momma bear run" "momma bear run"!!! Sure enough she made her way up the side of the hwy chargin people and cars leaving the scene and almost flipped one guys jeep. Frikkin crazy! Anyway, that's my story hope you liked it.

Oh yeah, salmon fishing on the Klamath at a place called ishi pishi falls, near Orleans. The bears would come down to the river on the other side and do their thing while we did ours. Man those bears can fish! They were lazy, showing up around 9 or so and in no hurry to get wet. When we would catch a fish, they would all stop and watch. We were glad the water was wide, fast and deep there!
If you always do what you did, you will always get what you got!

On my last trip to AK. We stole two different King Salmon from two different Bears. Scared off one with the Air-Boat and spooked the other one with the plane.
It might be lonely at the Top, but it's a bitch, at the Bottom !

Re: Ever fish with bears?
Made 5 trips to Alaska and fished among the bears everytime.
No real problems, you just have to stay alert, make sure you know where they and their cubs (if any) are. After you watch these magnificent animals for awhile your nerves calm down a little.
The only place I ever had bear trouble was on the West Walker River North of Bridgeportm in California. A bear decided at 3 in the morning that he would like to come into our Camper. Glad I was not in a tent that night.
