Site fishing The Delta in September!!!

Post by Dom »

Ok well kinda, The wife and I went out yesterday and I ran to the ferry crossing under that bridge there was weeds and Hyicin. Anyway I look down in the water and see MONSTERS! 1 had to go at least 12lbs with 7 and 8 lbders they were just swimming back and forth about 3 feet under the water between the mats. I dropped a senko in the crack between the mats and the big one nosed it then faded out of sight! The the other big ones came up and nosed it! my blood was pumping just waiting for one of them to hit.

But the would not so I picked up a drop shot with a wacky rigged senko dropped it down and instantly the little ones hit it I did not set just left it in the hole again the big girl shows herself nosing my bait then swims away under the mat. I gtried a few different colors on the drop shot and same thing every time nose it then swim back under the mat.

So I back the boat off and decided to rig up a punch rig (had cut it off to throw a swimbait, got a 7 in the morning on it) I rig up and PUNCHED the crap out of those two mats it was 10' of water under those mats I let it drop all the way thru sit there couple of hops and bring it up and punch some more!!!!

I am getting peaved now so I back off and throw a texas rig to the out side of the mats and worked from shollow to deep water NOTHING! I cranked the out sides NOTHING swimbait NOTHING! Then I threw a big ol senko to the out side and let the current drift it under the mat and just sat there for like 10 min. NOTHING!

So I am posting this becuase all the years I have been fishing the delta I have never ran across anything like this sure on Clear lake during the spawn but not on the delta so late in the year these fish were all toads and stacked ! What should i have done? Are these fish catchable? I am thinking they knew I was there but we ran to BULL FROG Marina for about an hour then went back fish still there but again they would not hit anything! Going out at safe light tomorrow and gonna hit on that spot EARLY see if they are there if they will eat.

So what would yall have tried?

It happens to me here on Clear Lake, I see a group of super size fish that sometimes just wont eat....

I think you are on the right track to go back in the early morning or when the tide is right.

I let the spot rest, keep the boat as far away as possible, be quite, and try different times of the day.

Hope you get her!

Some clown probably wrote "Don't eat anything off this boat" and posted an F on the bottom of your hull.
That had to be frustrating.

I would have backed off and waited for 15-20 mins or so, then start with long casts with a medium crank (burn it), then a jerk/ ripbait. Then move in closer with the wacky. But then again, what do I know?

Wacky rigged Flastrix!! On a Flickshake head.. You may get the big girls to hit.... Getting the fish to the boat before the hooks opens may be tricky!!!

Don't need no silly bobbers ... Just Hook them thru the back/spine ~ and they will flutter sideways as they release their natural distress mojo signal.

It ain't rocket science or  'ing at all. ..... Just that they may cost you a buck each for them Jumbo minnows @ Gotcha Bait.

Yer not alone Dom! During my guided trip yesterday, we saw more gorilla bass cruising around in one day, than I have ever seen on this River or Clearlake during the spring. It was simply astonishing. These fish would pop up out of nowhere, some of them we would see come straight at us from 30 feet away, barreling towards the boat to inspect what was in there rustling their neighborhood.

On the bright side, it assures me two things, the giant blackbass are indeed there on this River, much to the thoughts of those that they have demised or the seals and/or bait fisherman have cleaned em all out. Secondly, I am fishing the right areas, I just have not adjusted correctly yet in how I'm attempting ta catch em, because even though I could see em, I still could not catch them! LOL

Sound like you guys need Micster, 8 lb test, a S20 and the right gitzit. Also, the rest of the day to figure out when feeding time is.

That dude would spent all day and night out there figuring it out.

I hear ya COOCH!!!! I went out this morning to hit that ferry bridge
I cruise up and the ferry operater is right over the spot on the bridge !!!! He said he has been trying to catch them toads for 4 days he has dropped a live blue gill, shinner ,etc.. on em and nothing  So I asked if I could troll over and take a look and he says sure, So I troll over and take a look sure enough they are still there but spooked so I say thanks and head to Bull Frog I must have caught 20 fish, biggest 12"

So I head back up old river and you know that big opening on the front side of Quimby Island? Anyway I go up in there you can only go so far and you have to stay in the ditch, the whole place is infested with weeds . anyways I am working my way up its crystal clear water I am seeing 2 lbders a few 3's then I get about 30 yards back in there and i see TOADS!!!!!!!!!! I am talking 12+ :D :D :D :D :D They were in pairs and just going in circles in the ditch they would spook then came right back so I am thinking what the hell they cant be spawning or can they?

So I cast a texas rig past em and bring it back watching it as I work it I can see clear as day the little bass are coming out of the weeds slamming my beaver (lmao) but the big girls just get tight to the weed line and watch it never going near it

Anyway I stayed out till about 6:30pm tonight and just killed them little 12" bass on a vixen

I did get a couple of 2lb stripers today . Man I am so bummed out to see them fish and not get em to go is driving me nuts! So when you get em figured out send me a PM :D :D :D :D :D :D
