Just not ment to be!
Just not ment to be!
So I go out this morning launch out of rivers end fishing a Out going tide I am finding the bigger fish in the cuts and ledges in 10-12' of water I am just out of some nice fast current in this cut fishing rip rap and tuIes am throwing a deep diving Norman crank and she hits! She runs for deep water I am thinking striper, she is ripping drag off my quantum PT reel drag is locked down with 50lb power pro braid.
I am trying to turn her head I get her head turned and she runs again after about 4 min of this I get her head turned and she is coming up I see her and she is a HUGE BLACK BASS well over 10,11 , 12 JUST FREAKIN HUGE! She shakes and heads deep again I get her turned bring her back up and beside the boat I go to lip her she kicks and off again straight down under the boat and POP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my crank pops out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I sware it is just not ment to be!
First thing this morning hooked into a monster (dont know if striper or black on a swimbait and after 5 min and not being able to get her to turn (pretty sure it was a big striper) she pops free also I can live with that one I never saw her but the otherone man my heart just sank in my stomach by far the biggest fish I have ever hooked and saw on the delta . I learned somthing new today about them big fish at least I am on to somthing .
Just thought Id share the big girls are startin to bite

Re: Just not ment to be!
Heartbreaker!! A couple of years ago my son and I were fishing the back of Big Creek at Pedro, the week before he caught a 9 just down the bank. He says "Dad I'm snagged", I turn to look and his line is taking off to deep water. I tell him with some urgency in my voice "REEL, REEL". A huge fish comes up and jumps at least 2 ft. out of the water and his worm flies up into the air. He just slumped into the seat and started to cry. "At least you hooked a big fish," I told him. He now laughs about it when we get back there now. Or he says "Remeber when"
Keep at it and one day it will all work out.

Re: Just not ment to be!
I hear yall, man I am still bummed over that fish this morning, I dont carry a net in my boat but gonna go by one today at BPS if I had a net she would have been in the boat. I was trying to belly sling her in the boat becuase she had a face full of trebles and I think I played her to early to hard with that Power pro I think I might have ripped the trebles loose because whe she came up the first time I seen the bait and it looked like I had her hooked good.
And I usally change all my stock hooks over to OWNER stingers they are sharp as heck welded and strong I just picked up 2 packs of 4 and 6's and changed over a few poppers and Vixens I had but the top water bite was not working and I was graphing fish in 10-12' so I pull out this white deep diver norman I bought years ago for a tournament on clear lake it was still new never thrown and it still had the stock hooks , Lesson Learned no more baits will even make it in my boat with stock hooks.
So I am re-adjusting and gonna hit it again tomorrow its a big fish spot just hope the next one that pulls up to it on the same tide is as big and this time I will be better prepared.

I'm (not really) sorry too, but cranking with 50lb braid on a deep diving crankbait with the drag locked all the way down? C'mmmmmooonnnnn maaaaaaan!
Re: Just not ment to be!
What does his reel have to do with anything? It's not the reel than failed, the hooks pulled.
Dom, you always fish braid with cranks? Locked down drag with braid seems like it would rip hooks out fairly easy. Quit trying to rip thier lips off!

Braid floats so if your fishing a deep diving crank and you only want it to go a certain depth you use your line to help adjust, 10lb mono will run deeper then 12 lb mono and vise versa as for the drag locked down "MY BAD" the drag was locked becuase I switched the reel to my comp edge revolver crankin rod for cranking becuase my norman was going to deep with the 14 lb mono and forgot to loosen the drag but the drag worked perfect she stripped the line. the point was it was a big strong fish. But yes i use braid 90% of the time on my reaction baits out here remember this is the delta not a wide open crystal clear lake.
I know I screwed up I should have checked and adjusted the drag . As for quantums I have the PT burners and they are great reels they have never failed me I locked the drag and the drag LOCKED it pulled hard as it should have. Dont worry I will be posting pics before this year is over I found em now just gotta catch em LMAO

Re: Just not ment to be!
I feel you pain Dom. I lost a teener crank fish at the boat while fun fishing Lake Castaic a couple of years ago. Getting the big girls to bite is the hardest part. So, your fish was still a success. You don't learn much by touching the fish. You learn by the strike, and from the conditions that made it happen. At least it didn't happen in a tournament!
Re: Just not ment to be!
I can still in my dreams see the pig (15+) that spit my lizard just outside of reach of the net some 10 years later. The estimate on the fish is high because I had caught an 11+ two months prior and this one dwarfed my 11. I think all of us have felt this pain.
