Trolling battery size??

Post by BruceB »

Hi - Can someone tell me the correct size trolling battery for my Triton TR-18? I keep my boat a couple of hours away and am hoping to pick up a couple on the way up... thanks!

If you have room for group 29's that is what you want if not don't go any lower then 27's
Go with AC Delco or Trojans they don't cost as much as the gel filled batteries and they last just as long.

Battery tray size depends on how the boat dealer rigged the boat.
You want the largest group size; 29 or 31 requires 12 1/2" X 13 1/2 tray, should work for both.
Check out AGM's in lieu of wet or gel cell type batteries, there is a recent thread on this site.
If you are considering a Trojan battery, thier prices are nearly equal to AGM's, over $200 current prices. American battery is equal at 1/2 the price, same quality and same battery engineer who developed the Trojan's.

Always go with the biggest battery that will fit in your compartment because they will last longer. Changing out trays to larger ones just requires a few screws. Buy the biggest AC Delco that you can fit. They are sealed and you will have much less toxious gases released in your battery compartment. I had bad luck with Trojans and I couldn't stand putting water in the batteries. The smaller size and weight of the Optimas is cool, but mine didn't last nearly as long as my Delco's.
