So where are the lake police from Clear Lake......

Post by Hardshell »

when things go really well? No comments or cudos on how well the weigh-in went this last weekend at the AC Pro-Am? Well, here's my observations of how things went, the fish were taken from the livewells and placed in bags that were distributed by AC staff as to limit the number of anlgers waiting to weigh. There were only 2 small float tanks and never were they crowded with bags. The fish were taken from the anglers, weighed, and quickly transfered to the BBAC live release boat by a great group of volunteers. This process all took place on the docks of the fine facility that we fished out of, Konocti Vista Casino, there was not twenty feet between the float tanks, scale and release boat and every boat was provided dock space to tie up while weighing. The flights were 20 minutes apart and the weigh-in staff were finished well before the next flight arrived. Now, no matter if they're howeling caused this increased attention to the care of fish or not I'd sure hope that someone from that group that has been so vocal up there would comment when "THINGS GO RIGHT"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure would be nice to hear positive commentary from Clear Lake locals when the show is well done. Mark Mendez, Terry Davis and crew had a well thought out plan and executed it very well. Anglers had plenty of water to properly handle their fish and over all mortality for both days was low as a result. Anglers presented fish to the scales in a professional and orderly manner and it all went smoothly. Just can't ask for more.

why should people here at clearlake say anything when the job is done right the first time , that is the tournament officals jobs.if you saw the show week before on the bassmasters show it stated thatmortality in bass is when the fish is in the bags more than 5 minutes , so when the guys do a good job , they know it. i have been a weigh master for 8 years and we know when we have done a good job, no one has to tell us... john blair

my take on clear lake

Post by Rich hamilton »

great wasted resource period. non friendly non committed political situation. there are many great people and business owners there but the swing seems to be "we got ours" instead of a user friendly situation. I do have personal experience there to back up my claims. I would think this attitude is prevelant in resort style areas but I am not sure. I could understand people feeling like their resource is being "raped" but it is their fault for not directing the political community to manage such a great lake. what typically happens is that an organization blows into town and something goes wrong at the weigh-in and immediately the PRESS there jumps on the negative band wagon. it is truely amazing the power of the pen! Every director mentioned is a truely committed resource person who goes to great lengths to do the right thing. Solutions and ideas will make this place work, certainly not the good ole boy attitude!

Atta boys

Post by Pat »

John, I think the point being made here that the only time some people speak up is to be critical. It sounds like the Angler's Choice folks did a great job last week-end. I'm sure they know it, I'm sure the fishermen know it and I'm sure the local folks who came out to watch the weigh-in know it. Do they deserve a medal for fish preservation? No of course not, but an acknowledgement of their effort and a "thanks" seems perfectly in order, even if it's just line in the Record Bee saying the tournament was well run and the fish were handled with care and returned to be caught again some day. Everyone likes to hear a compliment. Especially when one "whoops" wipes out a whole string of "atta boys" as so often seems to be the case.

My hat is off to all the tournament staff who make the effort to put on these events and take good care of the fish too.

pat; yes i have to agree with you , i was at shasta over the weekend. phil had ask me to help with the weigh in since i help him with the wine region, but had other trmnt at shasta. the big thing here are the fish and how well they are taken care of. if we don't police ourselves someone else will. clearlake is a lot different than say berryessa or sonoma where not many people come to the weigh ins. these guys have not been here one to two days later when we see the dead fish floating. thanks john

I can only go by what I read on this forum. Yes, FPT got ripped for the weigh-in at Clear Lake. However I for one only read one side of that issue as I never saw any posts from the "other side". Unfortunately, people who come onto this site read those kind of posts, human nature takes over and they form an opinion. In that case I can almost guarantee it was a NEGATIVE opinion about bass fishermen and tournaments. Negative opinions will certainly not benefit the sport, especially when we are trying to convince DFG to modify the culling rule! I'm not suggesting that we should keep quiet about such episodes. In fact I think it ultimately did alot of good since from what I've heard the last FPT weigh-in went just as good as what I'm reading about the Clear Lake event. POSITIVE CHANGE! This is a good thing and one of the great aspects of this forum - discussion of issues and resolution of problems. I suppose those that worked the two weigh-ins I mentioned felt they were "just doing their job" - which they were. But the rest of the reading public that visits this forum but did not attend the weigh-in should be able to hear about the positive changes. Give them the opportunity to change their outlook to the POSITIVE side!! Besides that, everyone needs a pat on the back now and then! Like Hippie/Mark said above it's nice to get caught doing something right for a change.

For what it's worth,
Ken

My contact with the Lake Police

Post by Jim Conlow Sr. »

There were 5 local guys standing about 20 feet further from the launch ramp than were the the scales. There was a fellow there with a professional quality Video Camera. I asked him if he was a local person and the answer was that they all were. I asked the one with the camera if he was a private photographer. He informed me that he worked for the local newspaper.
My point is that they were there, and if they dont write something positive about the weighin it totally proves that they are biased.

Clear Lake

Post by delta1124 »

Now I haven't fished this lake in years, can't stand the little
garbage towns surrounding the lake, ugly as hell(I know it's my loss) My comment is, controversy makes better reading than a positive story, read any newspaper and see just how many positive stories you'll find. I just wonder how they would feel if all the circuits just quit going there, oh hell they would just build another casino to make up for the revenue loss. I say fish lake Pillsbury!

Interesting but...

There's no way orgs and clubs will quit fishing Clear Lake and lord knows we're not proposing that they do. Clear Lake is an awesome fishery and the folks up there are largely well intended and welcome the bass fishing industry. I think we make up a goodly amount of the contributors to the local economy. It would just be nice to see more positives coming from a few of the regular weigh in attendees then we sometimes receive. And if the locals observe problems at weigh ins I would hope that they'd take on a very proactive approach and look to get corrective measures done on the spot when fish can benefit the most. Coming back after the fact accomplishes little. As evidence by the recent outburst directed at the FPT. They won't be back on the lake until next season. Corrective measures have been taken by Vince but the folks at Clear Lake won't see them for some time to come.

No doubt that negative steps can lead to positive outcome, but if you truly have the fish in mind it would be great to see a guy like Terry Knight present at the pre fish seminars and take a little time to talk with anglers about taking care of their fish during the fishing day. I keep reading that folks believe that most fish mortality is caused by duration the fish are in bags. Having run a few tournaments I can tell you that most fish mortality around here happens long before that time. Guys just don't spend enough time with the fish as soon as they catch them and through out the day. Yeah it cuts into your fishing time, but bringing a sack of fish up to the scales that won't survive much beyond that point make any measures a tournament organization takes useless.

As to negative press outweighing positive press, well again that's a sign of the times where everything has to be sensationalized to hold the attention of a culture that exists on quick quips and the negative or bizarre perspective of life. Personally I don't take newspapers or watch the evening news because there is way to much negative and I really don't care who Jennifer Lopez is marrying or that Brad and whoever are breaking up. Modern times has way too much emphasis on subject matter that doesn't matter, yet most folks want this stuff and it's telling of what path our society in general is headed.

Sure wish more people focused on the good and positive in this world.

It's not that controversy makes better reading...it is a statement of where our society has gone...people seem thrive on controversy. And since the press makes money on readers/viewers, they are going to give the people what "they" want...all the controversy and gossip they can...jack those ratings up. The "News" is hardly ever the news anymore, just sensationalism of the latest controversy or gossip!

Can you believe...

that this thread has been viewed by well over 900 people. Only fifteen or so responses to the thread but it's been viewed by nearly double those that have looked at the SABP weight guess contest that has over 70 posts.

Interesting data I thought I'd share.

Refreshing to read positive reports in my opinion..Also it can be instructive to see and hear negative reports also..But I tend to agree that if you or anyone bags on someone or organization for poor performance, it is also very beneficial to brag on superior performance or action..Bringing problems to public light can be and usually is can be a positive even though the approach may be negative..But to fail and recognize the proper operation as well as the negative tends to show extreism rather than honest concern..

My Grandmother once told me

There will be people in life that:

Talk too much even when having nothing to say,

Talk to much even when having something say,

Talk to much when having only something negitive to say,

Talk too much when having something positive to say,

Sit and say nothing, when they have a lot to say.

Those who people will always remember what they had to say, will

be those who talked negitive. It is just human nature.

Absolutely no comparison to the future pro weigh in. And while unfortunate it's true that only "scut" and 'gossup" sell news. Job well done for a great circuit and Like Terry said , I will miss the california fishing next year. Watch out for them ground squirrels hardshell, nothin a 22-250 can't handle though.
