Illeagals and rising prison costs
Illeagals and rising prison costs
Why do we not have every manual labor position in agriculture being done by prisoners?
Wouldn't that go a long way towards solving both "cheap illegal labor" and the high costs of housing prisoners?
If worked out right it might even serve as a better form a rehabilitation for those that is even possible for. A sense of productivity and all.....

The great non sequitur committed by defenders of the State, including classical Aristotelian and Thomist philosophers, is to leap from the necessity of society to the necessity of the State.
Re: Illeagals and rising prison costs
I asked the same question in school and my Economics Professor said, now you want the Government to provide free labor to compete with private company. This does not sound like you Vince, you’re the Libertarian.
As for the high costs of housing prisoners, I wrote my Master’s Thesis on that subject. The thyme was the constraint of using the beds in the prisons. As with any process there is a point in time in the procedure that will slow down the rest of the process. In the prison system it is the beds. Liberals should hate this next part! You don’t have to build more prisons because the lack of beds – dived the prison population into three groups (1. New inmates, 2 Twice over, 3 Lifers) and putting each group into one the three time periods (6 am to 2pm, 2pm to 10 pm, 10 pm to 6 am) and rotate them around each 8 hours! The first set of 8 hours would be for education, the second set of 8 hours would be for General stuff ( i.e. work, visits, exercise), and the last 8 hours set would be for sleeping.
It is not that they need more beds, they are just using wrong!

Ya, Vince that doesn't sound like you at all. Sounds good from an economical standpoint however I wouldn't want my produce picked by inmates, just wouldn't have the same flavor.
So Marty do you carpool?

Re: Illeagals and rising prison costs
NO – carpooling is a liberal thing – I drive my own car, it offers me more freedom! Or did you mean that as a racist thing as in all the Mexicans jump in the truck?

Re: Illeagals and rising prison costs
Just curious, since you took an interest in inmates 'pooling beds.
Re: Illeagals and rising prison costs
Well taken as "get there from here" prospective it would seem I meant "govt" and "free" but I didn't say either.
I did say labor positions which more or less are all currently occupied by the dreaded illegals.
Now first, if the potential illegals knew that the rock bottom, unskilled positions were all going to be filled by wayward Americans it should greatly reduce the incentive to climb into the trunk of a car and cross a desert.
Now move to the point of govt and free.
I don't think prisons should be a govt taxpayer burden at all. The ONLY legitimate reason for imprisoning anyone is that they have caused loss in some way to another. The state has unrightfully interjected itself into the punishment process as a revenue vehicle and as a result more and more stupid laws have been passed to increase said revenue.
The victims compensation is rarely considered at all anymore.
Should that be murder or rape I say let the family decide whether they live, die, or work the rest of their lives turning over all proceeds beyond subsistence to the family.
Should it be a lesser degree of property theft or damage they pay for it plus any costs associated with bringing them into line for the collection. If they can't pay.....
the victim chooses the private prisoner labor facility the prisoner will work at until the surplus of his productivity has made restitution. Once again, this may lead to career paths for some who would not otherwise find themselves on one. They could spend the rest potion of their days studying to increase their skill levels. The facility could be anything productive and would pay for itself, even turn a profit.
Now why should the labor be free? If a farmer or factory needed labor and had made the necessary security improvements then they could contract from say a prison labor agency. The possibilities are vast.
As far as competing, by the time the costs have been distributed, including victims compensation, the wage should be competitive for the relative skill levels, actually a discount to compensate for security costs and potential risk to the employer. The final costs would be determined by the market.
Failing that, Marty has a good idea. Run it like a submarine or an aircraft carrier. They are always climbing into a pre-warmed rack.
Actually that model would probably be adopted immediately by anyone employing my system as there would be no taxpayer to subsidize waste. Except "general stuff" would be production instead.

I'm sure your econ prof wasn't an Austrian as his comment reeks of protectionism.

booster seat or helmet? Get the needle out of arm dude.

Re: Illeagals and rising prison costs
Its hard enough keeping people who are willing to work, happy, focused and productive as a team. Inmate labor would bring huge problems to a work environment. The flood of on the job injury claims by inmates is just one them. Inmate attitudes, transportation, security a few others.
Illegals in this country amount to subsidized labor, pure and simple. They don't pay their way and anyone who tells you they do is full of crap, the numbers don't add up. Most illegals come from poor countries are low skilled with very little education, its no surprise many end up in our prisons. Uneducated low skilled people make up the bulk of the prison population, good luck using that pool of talent.
