What components do you like in your Rod?

Post by Marty »

I’ve been getting more into my rods knowing from pass experience in different trades the tools make the job easier. When I first started fishing the rod and reel combo out of BPS or the rod from Wal-Mart or K-Mart would be just fine.

Then I started to upgrade my rods from well know makers of rods but now I want to take the next step and have my rods custom made. So I started to read rod building web sites trying to determine what parts I would like in my rods.

But then marketing gets in the way and everyone states this is the one to have or use. What would be the best components to have in a rod? Now there are different applications for our rods but if you were going to have a custom rod build what components would you insist on?

Rod blanks, rod handle (split grip or single grip), type of butt cap, reel seats (one piece or two piece), rod guides (with an insert or without an insert, two leg or single leg), and Hook Keeper (what side of the rod, top, bottom, left or right side – open or close).

Help me build the best flipping/jig rod, casting rod, and worm rod.

P.S. if I left something out please included it.

Marty,

I have been kicking around my ideal Jig Rod to have built and it would go like this (FOR ME)

7'3" Heavy Action Rod St. Croix blank (been looking at Pheonix, but i need to fish one)- this would be a 8' blank with the but taken down cut to my forearm, and a little tip taken off to give me the stiffness I want.

Stiff tip, 12 guides, Shuts down at the 4th guide Fuji Sic Single Foot. Exposed Foregrip, and Exposed Reel seat. Hypalon in Drk Blue with, Black, Blue and Gold wraps. I like the hook holders found on the Powell rods so I would want one like this, they are brilliant in terms of jigs, and worms and SUCK with Treble Hooks IMHO. I want the keeper facing the bottom of the blank at about 70 degrees

Well that is my dream stick _ I fish Fluor on my jig, if I were looking for a punch rod I would look at the titanium guides due to the abuse of braid

Probably one of the North Fork Composites blanks Gary Loomis is making and are getting built in to the Kistler Z Bones. Fuji K series micro guides in a spiral wrap, the only double foot micro's I know of. A good Fuji seat that allows me to feel the blank under the reel. Split grip with no fore grip and the ability to add weight to balance. A hook hanger that I can slide under rather than push a hook through so I can keep my plastics rigged.

I have fished most of the different rods avalaible, and I'm stuck on the Denali Rods. They are really light weight, and the sensitivity is unreal. Quality rods, and the best part is they don't break my bank account lol

What are you useing now?
Have you tryed the Dobyns Champion Extreme rods?
I think that you may find that Dobyns makes one hell of a rod and you may not "need" to have some made.

Scott, I have Dobyns, Powell, Phenix, GLoomis, and Shimano rods and right now my favor Rod is a Custom rod by Steve Custom Rods that Cooch turn me on too.

Every one of those rods are great and I want to take all of the best feature from each of them and have a few custom rods build just for me! But thanks
