Fuse for fish finder?

Post by drilltrash »

I just bought a Lowrance Mark-5x pro fish finder over new years break. going to put it on the boat today. i was wondering if i need to put an in line fuse between the unit and the battery? if i do, should i just use a BUS fuse? also what amp? thanks for any info.

I would definitely put an inline fuse, 3.5 or 5 amp. Both my HDS units came with inline fuse holders and 3.5amp(could have been 5amp, but no higher) fuses. Play it safe, it's not worth taking the chance of ruining your new equipment. Buss fuse or the the newer style, makes no difference, as long as there's one there.

You should wire the unit to your console terminal block that has fuses slots and add a switch on the dash to switch the power ON/OFF. This is insurance to prevent unwanted current on the power line when charging the cranking battery.
