Hotfoot Install?

Post by GregD »

I'm thinking about having a hot foot installed in my BassCat. Anyone have any idea of what it would cost and where would be a good place to have it done? It would be nice if it wasn't too far from where I live (Mountain View).

Thanks, Greg

I have a hot foot in my boat, but only because it came with it . With todays hydrolic steering I don't think its has as many advantages, I 'll take shifter and throttle controls for now, Why pay extra for parts and labor and gain a tired leg ,when you can up the throttle and let go, unless you are racing.....wasted money in my opionion.
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!

I've got one in my boat and really enjoy it. Glad I had it when I got tossed out and was not using the kill switch. Personally I would do the install my self. When I got mine it was way to close to the seat and I moved it forward. I would think you would need to disconnect the old throttle cable. Then hook up the new one that runs to the hotfoot. I know there are a lot of folks that do good work but it seems like if I can do it my self I usually do better work that dont cost me $90.00 per hr.

As stated on the previous reply, if you ever ( hope not ) get toss out imagaine your boat running wild at full speed or 3/4 going in circle all around and hoping it don't run over you. With a hot foot, your foot is off the pedal and your motor idles down and maybe somebody can get along side of it and hop in. You couldn't do that with your hand throttle set at 1/2 speed or more with the motor running that fast.
Even the best experience boaters can get toss out . Check it out G Doblyn who has years of experience on the water.

Don't waste your money. Joe at Angler's Marine tried to talk me out of it when I bought my latest Champion, but I wanted to try one. I thought I would be fishing rivers more and I know a lot of the guys in tight rivers run them. Your leg does get tired. I fish alone most of the time and it makes it harder to put your boat on the trailer. Angler's did a great job of installing it, but it looks pretty easy to do yourself. Make sure you angle it slightly inward.

Thanks All,

I've driven boats that do and don't have hot foots and I realize there are trade-offs. At this point I'm still leaning toward getting on put in.

I'll give Gene a call to see what it would cost.

I think you'll find it quite natural and will feel more in control of yer boat once installed Greg. I've had one in my recent boat since 2002 and have never felt more comfortable behind the wheel. We have all been taugh since the first day we began to drive a car, to control our motion buy using a gas controlled foot peddle. Our brains have been trained to do this since we were teens. We're much more effecient and responsive with brain to foot control versus brain to hand control for throttling. More importantly from a safety issue, I've always felt it was best to have two hands on the steering wheel in my boat at all times. It's much easier to react to precautionary and instant changes in boat course when ya can have both hands on the wheel and one foot on the gas.

Gene's an excellent choice, as well as, Frank and the boys down at Inland Marine can do this too for ya if Gene's schedule doesn't fit yours. Either way, stop in, say hey and show it off when ya git-r-done!

I understand you have to buy a longer throttle cable (2-3 feet longer) to hook up a Hot foot. Where would I buy a new cable? Thanks!

I would use some wire, cable or string and mark it every foot. Then just route it as if you were running your new one. Note the length when done and order from a marine part supplier or boat shop. Looks like you can order them from Overton's on line if need be.

Optimax Problems?

Post by GregD »

Someone mentioned to me that they've heard of problems with Optimaxes sucking reeds and taking out pistons when Hot Foots were in use and there was a quick/sudden release of the throttle. Anyone heard of this? Or on the flip side, any one out there with an Opti and Hot Foot that have had no problems?

Thanks, Greg
