Volunteer fishing coaches needed in Chico!

Post by Steve Carson »

OK guys, its that time again.
The largest single-day children's fishing event in the known world is happening on May 21 [Saturday] from 7 AM to 1 PM at Horseshoe Lake in Upper Bidwell Park.
We are definitely in need of as many "fishing coaches" as we can possibly get from the bass fishing community.
We expect at least 3,000 kids to show up to catch their first fish [8,000 pounds of catfish planted!].
Even if we had 150 bass anglers show up to help, it would not be too many.
The volunteer orientation is at 6:30 AM, but come whenever you can; plenty of volunteers have to leave after a few hours, and the kids just keep coming right up until the end.
For Chico/Paradise/Oroville locals, there will also be a tackle rigging/repair session on Thursday night 5/19 from 5 PM to 8 PM to rehab the 600 loaner rods.
See you there!

Forgot to add, you can e-mail me with further questions at scarson@sunset.net
Hopefully the mods can secure this with a sticky until May 21.

One other pretty cool feature is that if a kid catches and releases any of the resident largemouth bass that live in Horseshoe Lake, he/she gets a new rod and reel combo courtesy of the Chico Bass Club.
That way the onslaught of kids has minimal impact on the local fish population, while we encourage them to keep the stocked catfish.
Most years something like 5 or 6 bass get caught and released, and two years ago a kid got a 7-pounder.
