What is your favorite species of Bass?

Post by luvmystratos »

I have been at this Bass catching thing for quite awhile and I love it all. I have noticed each species of Bass has a unique quality. I was fishing yesterday and ran into a school/bunch of Spotted Bass and they kept be busy. I caught about 21 (Mixed but mostly Spotted) Fish in that period and one Spot was 3lbs or better, I have never had a better day fishing at this Lake. I caught them at Camache in the early morning period from about 6:30 AM to 9:45 AM. Caught them all on Topwater and they just flat out nailed the Bait. I compared the three species for their fighting prowess and I have to say for their size the Spotted Bass is just plain mean. They remind of a Drunk that just got up and needs another drink or has a Hangover and doesn't want to hear any noise. (Me a few decades ago) and will tear your Head off if you don't shut up. The Smallmouth is another fighter that hits the lure with force and fights like a Pitbull. The Largemouth puts up a good fight but not that big unless the Fish is a big one.

What species do you prefer?

Skeeterman nailed it,if it has bass in the name,it is the fish to catch..I will also say when a spot hits, you have no idea how large or small it is until you actually see it..The first time I hooked a spot, I was sure it was over 4, that is until I finally saw it and it was closer to 1.5..

It's definitely NOT Redeye Bass! They attack anything of any size, and I haven't caught one of legal size. They are one hell of a fighter, though. I'd bet if they did get bigger, they'd be up there with a Spot.

I remember as yesterday, 13 years ago, a 4# McClure Spot on 6# test. Took forever to land, and still didn't give up til the bitter end. For that fight alone, my fave is Spotted Bass. Even the cookie cutters are fun for a while. But numerous.

I don't have a lot of Smallmouth experience, but the ones I hooked were hard fighters as well. I've heard they're the toughest of the Bass to figure out? If so, they'd be my favorite to try to figure out.

I like the size of Largemouth, either Northern or Florida, but not so much the fight. The bigger/older the fish, the more skill it takes-and that's what I love the most. I just want to Trick a Trophy, then I'm good.

If we can include Stripers, they'd be my favorite for fight and the only species of Bass that I harvest. Deep fried in Beer Batter!

Technically not a bass but the peacock bass is my favorite . Nothing like haveing a teener to twenty lbr. explode on top water. My favorite " bass " pound for pound is definatly the all mighty smallie.

I'm with RonT, as much as I love tracking all three species of black bass we have here, that Peacock Bass, the Grande Pavons and Tucunare of the Amazonus Region, are the most spectacular bass I've ever had the pleasure of fishing for!

I will take a 5lb spot or smallie over a LM any day. Unless I am in a tourney, that is, in which case I will be happy with a 5lb anything. Picked up a 4.6 spot a few weeks back and it hit like a hammer. Thought for sure it was pushing 6 or 7lb until I got it up close to the boat. Lots of fun.

Well take a 5lb fish of each and I would rate it like this as far as a good pull.

#1 Smallmouth
#2 Striper
#3 Spot
#4 Largemouth

As far as favorite it would be a Smallmouth and yes a Striper is a Bass :)

Bass are bass or .....#1,#3 and #4 are sunfish family, not bass! #2 is a true bass. Peacock bass are not true bass, belong to the genus Cichla family of perch.
Kelp (calico) bass are stronger pound for pound than all the above, great sport on bass tackle. Never caught a big peacock bass but they look tough on videos.
My favorite are giant FLMB.

Stripers ....... Home Run for myself in personal preferance.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Big Havasu smallies on topwater.
Spotted bay bass pound for pound are awesome. Better than a calico in my opinion. Besides you fish the same structure for bay spotties as you do for freshwater. A spotty slams a spinner bait like nothing else. Flippin docks for those suckers is awesome as well.
