I have used a floor scraper(the one the flooring guys use after the tile has been jackhammered off the concrete pad) and a razor blade. Sometimes the wire wheel causes friction and just melts what glue is left and spreads it out again :x

If you are going to recarpet; clean with aceton*, remove uneven surfaces with a scraper.
* read the warnings and follow instructions and test a small area.

speaking from my own trial and error experience, the wire wheel and high speed drill was the only method I found both effective and efficient. I tried the acetone/scraper combo at first and ultimately just stopped using the acetone at all and went to work with the wire wheel on dry, untreated glue.

Ok, did a test with the wire wheel . Worked great on the bulk of the rubber backing that was riped loose from the old rug and most of the glue. What about the small amound of glue that kinda melts or pushes aside . seems to really stay stuck. Can I just call it good enough since it seems to bond to the glass anyhow or does it really need to be perfectly clean for proper bond on the new rug.

When I did mine I used an orbital sander and it took it right off, went thru a few peices of paper but it worked well. Vacumed, wiped it down and she was ready to go...2 years later still holding up great!!!

The wire wheel method worked great for me on the lids once I removed them from the boat! But I used the adhesive remover they sell by the gallon at Lowes on the glass decking and bottom! The trick with the remover was to poor it on and saturate it the night before, then it ALL just scraped right off very easily with a putty knife! One quick wipe with acetone on a rag and it was spotless and ready to go!

Thanks for the replys guys. Eighteen hours and a sore shoulder, mission accomplished. Useing a combination of the sudgestions posted the hull cap and locker lids are clean as a whistle. The deck with gel coat I had to just use alot of elbow grease and a 3/4 " chisle and fallow up with some enamel reducer I had handy from another project. On the aluminum locker lids the wire wheel worked best becouse for some reason the glue was crystalised and dryer so the glue brushed right off. Unlike the rest that was much softer. Now we are off to the gel coat guy to repair a few battle scares and repair the screw holes that held the passenger console (that has been removed as well ) before the new rug go's down.
