Senko Rod

Post by Nevadaboy »

Hey guys I love to fish senko but Im tired of fishing them with a spinning rod what would you guys recommend for the perfect casting model senko rod? I was thinking a 7ft medium action but I dont know if I should get Extra Fast, Fast,Med-Fast or Mod-Fast. Thanks for the help

What are you fishing open water or structure, tulles, weeds etc?
Open water 704 CEF EX.FST 7'0 HVY
Not open water 765 EX.FST 7' 6" HVY
" " 766 EX FST 7'6" MAG HVY
All 3 are powell rods

powell 733!! this rod is by far my favorite! very light and sensitive, u can feel just about every bite. very good for senko and alot of other baits(jigs, frog, buzzbait, blades, etc.)! very versitle..i got mines paired up with the old batam curado 101 and i gotta say this combo is super nice! very light and can fish all day. you wont regret!

I love the Irod 744 for the bigger 7" senkos and i just can't away from my GLX 843 for the smaller 5 & 6" senkos. That rods strong and great for landing those fish.

NevadaBoy, it doesn't say on the rod, although it feels like a mod fast to me..It is one of the Kistler California Special series..I have been using it for 6 or more years now and have zero complaints..I have no problem with handling fish in open water or thick cover..I paired it up with a Shimano Castaic and generally use 14 or 17 pound test floro for line..It works well either flipping, pitching or even making longer casts..I will say it is difficult to to get the Castaic adjusted properly to get good pitching results, but I have been using it kong enough I have gotten used to it..It is a lot easier to pitch the 6 and 7 inch Senkos than it is the 5 inch ones..

What spinning rod do you currently use and what is wrong with it? If it doesn't have enough backbone and it's a medium get a med-heavy. If the tip is too soft go towards fast or extra-fast. My recomendation is a med-heavy, 7' to 7'6" with a fast of extra fast tip. Look into rods that have Batson RX-8, phenix, Lamiglas Certified Pro and North Fork Composets blanks.

7 foot medium heavy power, extra fast action.
Has the tip sensitivity to feel or see the slightest tick, and the backbone to bring em in.
My favorite is the older St. Croix Avid AC70/MHXF.
Powell makes a good one also. Hope this helps.

Look into Dobyns or lamiglas rods before buying. Any worm rod with 3 to 4 power, fast action, 6' 8" to 7'4" works good for Senko's 5" to 7". I use lamiglas 703 or 704 series, any quality rod mfr is OK; It's all about warranty and service.

Good choice! I use a Powell 703CEF for 95% of my Senko fishing. Love the XF action, softer tip and stout backbone. Great stick!
