End of an era -- Harvey Naslund is gone

Post by richjh »

Harvey Naslund, who epitomized Western bass fishing, died this morning at 4:23 at his home in El Cajon with his family by his side. Naslund was known for running quality bass fishing tournaments that offered a touch of class and always provided competitors with a fair shot and a good reward. He would stand by his decisions and was fiercely loyal to those who stood by him. More information will be available later. Meanwhile, he is missed.

Harvey will be missed, the only T.D. I've ever fished with that had the balls to dock you weight for not paying attention at the meetings! I can still here him shooshing guys on the mic when they weren't listening. Not to mention he was able to handle 200 teams of carp shooters as well at Clear Lake, I'll miss you buddy, God's speed.

i only knew Harvey for a short while but the little time we had was memorable. I won an AOY title while Harvey was on his comeback run with WON. He always made us feel special. Thats just who he was. He wasnt trying to make us feel good but he did and i thank him! RIP Harvey!

I am very sorry to hear of Harvey's loss and my condolences go out to his family.

Harvey was a good friend and was always available to give advice and offered guidance and support when and where needed. HIs will be a great loss to the bass fishing community.

A key piayer in the genesis of Western Bass fishing is gone. R.I.P. Harvey.

If the family is having a public service please let the community know as I am sure there will be a groundswell of support.

I was e mailed this morning by Bill Rice. I have spent all day thinking about what can be said about Harvey.
Love him or hate him he brought west coast tournament bass fishing to a new level. He was honest and fair. True to his word and a gentleman. He would bring the hammer down quick when needed. Many a tournament director has called Harvey for advise over the years. He would offer up help when needed as well as solid advice.
Many on this board never new Harvey or fished a tournament that he ran. Those that did fish one of his events all will have a solid lasting memory of Harvey.Good or Bad you will remember Harvey.
Myself I have many memories of him from standing next to him at weigh in to Harvey wearing his W.O.N. blazer. I will miss calling you asking for advice Harvey.
My thought are with the Naslund family.

My first memory of Harvey Naslund dates back to the Pisces Bass Club back in '69 when he was secretary of the club. Harvey was responsible for the club meeting minutes and news letter. Harvey also ran the clubs local bass derbies and everyone respected him, not an easy task.
Later, I believe it was 74' Harvey joined WON Bass and expanded his reputation as being honest and respected as a TD. Harvey remains to this day as being honest and respected, a tribute that we should all honor. We will miss you Harvey.

 I have worked tournaments since the 1970's. Nor Cal Bass, West Coast Bass, WON Bass. None of these compared to working with Harvey. He was one of a kind. The first tournament I worked with Harvey was at Clear lake when Fred Borders won. Harvey needed some help and I volunteered. After those 2 days he wouldn't let me go. We had great times woking together. At one of the OPEN's one of the fishermen upset me terribly. Harvey took me in the hall and we talked about it. I was in tears. but Harvey settle me down and things were fine and I forgot about and went on about my business. We never hard a cross word. Working with him was a pleasure.
When he called me and said he was going to try it again I was glad. He even asked me to help. Even though I have not been on the best of health, I told him I would do my best to help. I only got to help him ar 2 of the tournaments because of my health, but enjoyed it.
I am so sorry he is gone, nobody will ever replace him. He worked so hard for all the fishermen and women. RIP Harvey. Love Bev

Bev: Harvey surrounded himself with some of the finest people I have ever met including you, Hal Huggins, Fil Torres and several others. Most great leaders do this and Harvey was no exception. He made sure he had a great staff so he could focus on what he was best at. Mission accomplished.

God broke the mold after He made Harvey...and Harvey will be remembered for all that he did for the anglers (including myself) and this great sport of tournament bass fishing.

As Harvey would say.."It was a heck of a run"... And he would be right.
We will miss you, you old goat!

God bless Harvey and his family.
