Had a fishkill across the street...

Post by GKramer »

Can't sugarcoat it. It's been several years, but the hot weather got to Lake Elsinore yesterday, according to the city. Looks worse than it is, but never saw one that actually looked good.

Here's to a somewhat wet winter.

I heard one report about a mild el nino this year and then I read one about it being stronger than first predicted... Lets hope the "experts" are correct..

I am so with you on that, Darren. BTW I went back out, they cleaned things pretty well. Hard to see there was a problem--aesthetically, anyway.

I have a small lake by my house about the size of Castaic lagoon. It is only 25ft at its deepest. With temperatures about the same as what Elsinore has seen why have there been no big fish kills there? They do have six or so solar powered aerators but they are small.

A lake basin as old as the planet collecting phosphates for a thousand years needs a greater volume of water to offset the high nitrate load. We grow algae fast, which dies and the decaying stuff steals oxygen in the night. Water level is getting at a critical level for this condition--and then the hot weather hit.

The latest report I have heard is a very wet winter. I guess all we can do is prayer for rain.
