if I am reading that right they "removed" 5000 smallmouth bass from Tahoe? Whats DFG's take on this since it spans 2 states I am sure they had to be informed?

I know for a fact there are largemouth in there, only heard rumors of smallmouth until now. Anyone got a boat with a 4 stroke......

Calling smallmouth bass an invasive is a slippery slope!! The rest of california could be next for smallmouth, largemouth, and striped bass!! All are non-native species that are already under attack! What's ridiculous about this is that Brown Trout and Lake Trout are also both non-native species that were introduced to Lake Tahoe, but they aren't removing them?

Most "non-native" species like smallmouth, largemouth, stripers, brown trout, lake trout, etc... have been in California and have been around longer than most of our families have been in California.

I suppose if they found "Guatalupe bass " (a native bass from the mexico /Texas border region) that snuck into Tahoe seeking a better life they would designate lake Tahoe as a "Sanctuary fishery" and it would be OK .

There just now finding out? I have caught them in the keys for as long as I can remember. You can run most newer 2 strokes on Tahoe, just so you know.

Direct fuel injection (DFI) two-stroke engines
Two-stroke engines that meet the California Air Resources Board 2001 or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2006 emissions standard
All four stroke personal watercraft engines
All four stroke gasoline or diesel sterndrive/inboard engines
All four stroke outboard engines
The following engines are no longer legal on Tahoe Region lakes:

Any engine that does not meet the U.S. EPA 2006 or the California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2001 emissions standard, including:

Electronically Fuel Injected (EFI) or Rotax Fuel Injected (RFI) two-stroke engines purchased before January 27, 1999
Any carbureted two-stroke engines
Any engine that meets the US EPA 2001 standard only
These new requirements will be in effect on all lakes within the Tahoe Region.

If you have a two stroke that meets the standard take a copy of the law with you. Some of the private launch ramps don't understand the law and believe no two strokes at all. So you may have to educate them.

I was up at South Shore Tuesday-Thursday and and driving around the lake and other places I listened to some local radio and they dont want them in there at all. The Nevada F&G know with the rocky structue and the abundant Crawdad's it might,will, be impossible to eliminate them along with the size of the lake. I dont to see bringing the Ranger up here to fish in the future though.

One more thing I dont recomend driving up to check out Fallen Leaf lake the road is BAD.

Maybe they should drain the lake. That always works in non native species eradication.

We always took family vacations at Meeks Bay (Tahoe) and brought my new Roadrunner bass boat (bought from Troy Brawley) to the lake in 1974. I had a 7.5 horse gas trolling motor on the back, along with the 115 horse Evinrude. It attracted quite as crowd around the dock, day after day!! The Tahoe crowd had never seen one before. I told them I gave haircuts using the big arm rest chairs! I caught lots of Macks, Kokanee, and native Rainbows (up to 22 inches). Had to do something besides sitting on the beach!!

The last time I was at lake tahoe I stayed at my aunts house in the keys and a friend and not expecting it caught a bunch of largemouth from their dock and that was at least fifteen years ago.

Back in 1958 our family was vacationing at Meeks Bay and not knowing any better I caught crawdads under the rocks and used them as live bait. Drifting the first deep shelf in about 100' of water mamaged to catch a few big rainbows and lake trout. Entered the 10 lb 4 oz rainbow and won local rainbow trout contest.
I fished some rocky areas towards truckee river from shore and caught a few 12" smallmouth bass. The smallmouth were bright greenish golden color with darker golden bars, smallmouth bass been in Tahoe for a long time.

Sweet! one more huge tournement venue for some upscale orgs....ya can not say there is no ammenities close by! shasta in jan, delta in april, clear lake in june and tahoe in august!

They have much bigger issues than that! I have not showed anyone,but now its out,so might as well.

There is also good quality Largemouth bass there too!

A freind of mine lives there and has been sending me pics for years.

They average 5lbs! He's been catching them year in and year out on rattle traps in the spring!

I was suprised,but not really surprised...

There are also stories of big Sturgeon there that were realeased long ago when trucks from Idaho had issues making the trip to California to stock trout, and baby Sturgeon were in these stock trucks. They accordingly let go the trout and baby Sturgeon into the lake.

Maybee we will have are own Lochness Monster! too! lol..


The lake is so big and soo deep there is no way they can eradicate them. I say let em grow and lets get the tubes and rip baits and have a summer tourney with our 4 stroke motors! lol..
