Winter NCC?

Post by TomAtkeson »

The chilly weather and the loss of a friend has got me thinking about the old tradition of a bunch of guys from here getting together to fish and eat. So are there any plans in the works?

This is usually where Guy Kelly and I jump in and try to help promote the idea of a NutCase event.
Unfortunately that's usually the extent of the discussion.

Finding a date that works is difficult,
Selecting a body of water that suits enough people is also tough.

I'm in if enough people show interest.

Hello Guy. Wake up. It's your turn.

Well now that I'm back in California I can help promote and organize these events as well. Maybe we can use the vote feature to determine what the best lake and day would be?

We've done one nearly every year I've been up here so far... Guy is all mouth an no action!

I'm heading to Berryessa between Christmas and New Year, if anyone is interested in doing something there during that week.

I'm always up for a Nutcase, if it fits the schedule and I can get some help putting it together... of course it's a bitch getting shot being the messenger, but at least it wasn't fatal!

Throw out some ideas and dates and see what interest is generated - that works best for getting the ball rolling. Once we have some input, we can put up a poll, remembering that our past poll results have never ended up being close.

My vote would be for that Friday 12/30. I stay off the roads on New Year's Eve, day or night. Too many drunks and other fools. Berry works.

For those who have been to any of our previous Berry trips, I've booked the same RV site for 12/23-27, so if you are fishing be sure to stop by and hook up with us!

Also, I'll likely have a back seat open those days, for anyone who might want to get out and play.

Roger

EDIT: Scartch that, unless you're planning on staying over the weekend... I just received a call from Pleasure Cove letting me know that the gate will only be open 'til noon on Christmas Eve and will be closed all day on Christmas. Normal operational hours resume on Monday, but be aware that the gate closes at 5:00 during the week. From previous experience, they are very strict on their gate hours as Mona was locked in once before.

Well we got 3 for the 30th at least. Where do we go from here guys? Dont wanna let it die. I've had a blast fishing Western Rallys and NCCs over the years. I suggest anyone that uses this forum to get in on this as its a great way to get on the water with guys you mostly know by screen names, catch some fish have fun and food with a good fun bunch.

Hey Mark - good to see you post! Hope all is well with you and Allie!

Unfortunately for me, I wasn't able to swing the whole week off, and will be stuck working the last Wednesday - Friday of this year. I'll have to enjoy the days I do have scheduled there, so if anyone comes out to play while I'm there be sure to look me up.

I'd say we probably need to book something out into January or February for a full-on Nutcase, given the lack of responses to this proposition. Doesn't mean that the folks who are willing can't get together on the 30th though - should be good times and I'd bet Berry is going to be fishing great.

Thats too bad. Maybe January or Feb is a better time as it will give people a better chance to organize and plan the trip out. I know the holidays are a hectic time for everyone. Maybe a poll would go better. If some of the previous organizers could PM me and give me some tips on getting this sort of thing together I'd appreciate the help. If anyone wants to help me out and organize as well that would also be great.

From all of the Nutcases that I've been involved in planning, the hardest thing (and most important) to do is nail down a date that works for most. The rest is pretty easy.

So I'd say you've got a good start with the poll thread... figure 30-50% participation from those that commit. Once we have a common date, we'll just have to get commitments for who is going to bring what to the pot luck, what venue we'll be operating from, time frames for arrival, launch, weigh-in, pot luck and wrap up.

We'll have to sort out whether it is a strict blind draw (doesn't usually go over well), and whether it is a split or single session. Given that it is during the shortest days of the year, likely best to do a single session IMHO.

As for costs - since we're not drawing a permit we can't do prizes or entry fees. Never have anyway. We can, however, take up a collection for a charitable cause as Obi mentioned... the last time there we collected $120 for a family caught in a tragic situation, as the son accidentally shot his father while hunting.

If someone wants to do plaques, that is a great touch. I still owe some from one of the past events - one of these days I'll actually get 'er done I promise!

Since Berry seems to be a popular choice, and great one at that, I'd recommend having the festivities at Pleasure Cove. I'll likely book my RV site, and it is a good home base for the pot luck and social hour. Besides, I have plenty of Jack and Crown on hand!

Fishing is usually good there, and this time of year it is a pleasure to get out on the water without the other users. When a date is determined, we should probably check to make sure we don't conflict with any tournament trails, and if so take that into consideration.

There are cabins for rent at Pleasure Cove, and I know Obi took the initiative to rent one that a bunch of folks stayed in for the last event there.

Good times for sure, and I'm looking forward to getting together with my WB brethren Nutcases for another freezing good time!

Thanks for taking the lead Tom - I'll help out all I can also.

Thanks Roger! Im looking forward to it and the poll is coming out great. Someone on that thread listed the major tournaments around that time. Ill check the hook's Jan tournament date also. Your suggestion of Pleasure cove sounds good to me :) Ill have to look into cost of a cabin for the night might wanna come a day early or stay the day after see anyone with a boat and the will to have another chilly day out. I agree on the one session. As for the draws I'd suggest anyone that has a partner in mind let em fish together (even thought the event should be gettin out with someone new) and anyone else just do a blind draw sort of deal non boater names in a hat and boaters come through and pick names. Other thing I can think we need would be a scale ... if no one has one that's going we can always use someones hand held and just weigh all fish in an empty weigh bag with one scale.

Thanks again!
