Just want to say thanks for a well put together event by Anglers Choice this weekend on Lake Oroville. It was the first Anglers Choice event for me and was pleased with the organization from picking partners to handing out the Hardware.
As an Amateur many times its the luck of the draw, and not necessary of your skill set. You just come prepared the best you can, have your boat mechanics in order and pay attention. I was lucky this weekend to have two great PRO's and I totally am aware of that.
Saturday's PRO Ryan Friend stepped up to the plate, for his first time being a PRO in a pro/am event. This is not to say Ryan is a rookie, he fishes over 25 tourneys a year and puts tremendous hours on the water preparing.
We had a day on the lake that will be remember by both of us for a long time. Even though we cull all of my fish for a 5 fish limit/20.57 pound bag on Oroville, the mechanics on the boat were something most AM's dream about and many long time team partners would enjoy. I learn the benefit of using very light line, down sizing and matching the bait. Even though as a fishermen I know these things, and tried to do them when out on the water, but experiencing them first hand makes it really sink in to the old dogs brain. And yes you can have a great bag on Oroville and leave the Cali-bama rig in the locker.
Sunday's PRO Mark Mendez worked really hard to make sure my 20 lb. bag would hold up on a day when overall larger bags were being brought to the scales. Even though we talked about it very little, I could feel he really wanted to put us on the fish to help my weight. He did this with us weighing in 15.06 lbs. He shared technics with me about the Cali-bama and other tackle. I am not sure if he realized how much I was learning by watching how he skillfully worked the water.
Both PRO's adjusted their game plan as the weather change. Both PRO's explained why we were fishing where we were fishing. Both PRO's explained how they got to that area during their pre-fishing. Both PRO's were going for 5 quality fish not just 5 fish to weigh-in and then look for bigger fish.
As you read this you can see what a great weekend this AM had on Lake Oroville at the Anglers Choice event and it was not only about coming in first place but more about how I got there. Oh and remember the days when a 11 or 12 pound bag at Oroville would get a check. That lake is growing up and its exciting to see
