Trailer Bunk Recarpet

Post by Greg E. »

Anybody know someone who recarpets trailer bunks, perferrably a mobile unit that could do it in the parking lot while I am fishing. With more and more of us keeping our boats longer I would think this might be a good part time business.
If not a mobile unit, somebody in the North LA or Ventura county areas.

Its really easy to do yourself. I did all the work to the new bunks in my garage. I got all new hardware and lags also. Next time I went to the lake I brought my cordless impact and changed them out after I launched my boat. It took about 10 minutes.

Just be sure to buy pressure treated lumber, and pick it for straight and relatively knot-free.
And use stainless steel lags, or they will rust out. Been there, done that.

I was reading a reply about this subject from another site and a very reputable person had this reply. Why use carpet, just paint the boards. He claimed the advantage is that the wet carpet does rot out the boards. The carpet doesn't help the boat slide any better or provide any protection but does hold dirt and weeds. I'm not sure how it would look but it does make sense.

I don't know about that, just paint the wood. Think about about this. 3500# towing 100 miles would you want to have it resting on painted wood or have a little bit of cushion from the carpet. Repeated road bounce on bare wood will inevitably cause marring to a fiberglass surface. I used to carry a little shop broom to sweep the bunks before I picked my boat up out of the water. I guess I'm getting lazy.

ive done mine 3 times, and i found a place that makes synthetic bunks. i have not bought them yet but i think i will give them a shot. they have a lifetime warranty and there very slippery making it super easy to get the boat on and off the trailer, easy to clean, im starting to get some pretty good wear marks on the gel coat where the boat slides up on the carpeted bunks. i think the synthetic bunks might help prevent this too.. there a little pricy, but considering how much pressure treated 2" x 4" or 2" by 6" are it might not be a bad price ? then factor in the cost of carpeting, and time to re-cover the wood... these might be the way to go ? if you want the link let me know ..

I just replaced the Bunkers Boards on my trailer! I looked into using synthetic bunkers but found out they only came in 1” by 5 and half inches. Even if I double them up they would not be strong enough and still had sway between the supports on the trailer.

I've seen the bunks you are talking about Phil. It's seemed pretty good the only problem with that is you woudnt be able to unclip the boat until you got all the way down the ramp. I was at a launch ramp one time (long beach I think golden shores) and saw the bunks you are referring to, the guy had just had them installed it was low tide the guy was backing down the ramp with the boat unclip and it started to slide off before he even hit the water. Some scary stuff. I would not mind buying the synthetic wood and then carpeting those at least you would eliminate wood rot.
