Braid questions

Post by fishbonz412 »

I fish braid for spinning applications, frogs and punching, but have a few questions.

1. How often do you change out your braid and add fresh line? If you do it once a year, please state how often you fish, e.g. 200 days a year...... :D

2. For those who have used, how has your Power Pro super slick held up? Any particular goods or bads noted?

3. Same for question 2, except for those using Sufix, e.g. 832 or Performance?

4. if you use a leader with your braid, how long? Why choose "in the reel" vs. "out of the reel" for your connection knot? In my hands, I find the Alberto knot superior to the Uni knot....

Thanks!

I change my braid when it gets low. When I retie my knot to the leader I usually cut off about 3-4' of the braid. I fish every weekend, not sure how many days that is but if I'm not working I'm fishing

2. For those who have used, how has your Power Pro super slick held up? Any particular goods or bads noted?

I've been using the slick8 for about 6 months now. Well, the smaller 10-15lb stuff isn't very good. It has a lot of memory, especially compared to Samurai. Haven't had any problems or complaints with the 50-70lb stuff. It bleeds a lot, but all braids do

3. Same for question 2, except for those using Sufix, e.g. 832 or Performance?

832 is the worst braid I've used. It gets twisted and is hard to manage. I like the flouro braid from spider wire but its really loud like the old PowerPro

I like the knot to just enter the reel, just personal prefferance. Albright knot is my confidence union knot!

I fish at least one day every weekend...

1. I just started fishing all braid the first of the year and have no plans to change it at least for a while.

2. Haven't used the supper slick

3. LOVE 832 I have it on all my bait casters 30-65lb.

4. As far as the leader is concerned that all depends on what I am doing. Drop Shoting I will use anywhere from 6-12', if it is something I might be pitching I make it just short enough that the knot is outside of the tip guide. If I dont i seems like the knot always ends up just inside the tip guide and it hangs up and i get a small backlash and my pitch goes erant. If i am just casting I go with the 6-12' and the knot comes trough the guides just fine. I have had nothing but problems using braid to leader on the one micro guide rod I have.

As far as knots I use the alberto too ( with 4-5 wraps each way smaller knot and I have not had a failure), and love it. I have been using a drop shot weight to tie it and can tie it almost as fast as a palomar and I feel like I am gettting even better stength because I can keep the line more uniform and tight and I am not pulling as much slack out when I tighten it and burn my leader less.

I use the braid Dean Rojas uses; I use the leader and knot that Brent Ehrler uses; I drive the brand boat KVD uses; and I fish Road Runners--that nobody uses.

I've been using the 15lb on my spinning rods for about 6 months. I enjoyed the extra casting distance. I have noticed that when using light techniques (not enough weight to keep steady pressure like sight/bed fishing), the line wraps up and around on the end.

I tried 832 and didn't like it at all. It seemed stiff and didn't cast well for me. I went back to Daiwa Samurai. It's soft, very smooth, and casts well. I use 15# on my drop shot rig with a 7 foot-8# flouro leader. I use a double uni knot to join the two. I use 50# Samurai on my flippin' stick and frog rig.
