Shasta help

Post by Rob »

taking the my family and bro's family on houseboat to Shasta. Only been on the lake once before. Any help appreciated. types of structure they're hanging on? red clay, sloping points, steep walls? depth? Also, the girls want some trout and I'm not a troller, so any ideas? up the rivers? or any water still running in in any of the inlets?? Thanks in advance....

Throw super spooks and poppers from first light untill the sun gets high on main lake points, look for shade pockets in the cuts after that. When the topwater bite slows down grab a spinning rod with a wacky rigged senko, a tube or a 6" straight tail worm on 1/8 or 3/16 oz darthead and fish down to around 25 to thirty feet. Look around for mudlines when the boat traffic starts getting a little heavier and throw a 1/2 oz. white spinnerbait with double willow blades or a deep crankbait. switch back to your topwater baits late in the afternoon and fish them untill dark.

If you also want a few trout try blue and silver cast masters. Use your sonar to find them and then cast letting them determine the retrieve. Last summer for the week I was up there it seemed like they wanted me to burn it.

Thank you for jumping in with that Ron! that Nickel/Blue Kastmaster will catch just about anything that swims in Lake Shasta at some point or another :D
The most recent good trout bite on the lake that I've heard of was at the very top of the McCloud arm where the water temp changes. I had a guy in here over the weekend that was catching them on the surface on a Super Spook Jr. ( not sure of the exact color ) and floating Rapala's, He did mention silver with a black back when he was talking about the Rapala. Right now I would skip the trolling and head up the McCloud arm. Good Luck out there!!!
