I throw mine on a Phenix MBX707H with 15-17lb floro! I like added lenth 7'7" for hook sets! I think any heavy powered 7'2"-8' rod would work just fine! If your fishing it through a lot of grass than switch to 30-50lb braid!

It depends upon what I'm mainly fishing for.

For black bass, I use a Lamiglas XCF705R and Shimano Curado reel with 65 lb braid. I love fishing the trash fish over weedy areas so that's why I go with braid.

For stripers, I like to swim the trash fish faster so I use a Powell 735MH with a Quantum Energy PT770 reel with 65 lb braid.

Powell 764c Endurance. Its got the back bone to handle that bait and dive the hook home, with just the right amount of tip to let them eat it. As far as the reel you cant go wrong with a Shimano Curado in your choice of gear ratio.

Powell 765 SBR.

2nd choice is a Powell 764 endurance.

765 SBR is actually my favorite rod period because of the super forgiving tip that lets the fish get its head turned before it realizes its in trouble, and then the back bone drives it home. I try to break this stick on every bite I get and it hasn't failed me yet.

Your rod choice is by far the most important piece of your equipment for fishing the Trashfish. Just try and remember not to jerk on the bite, point at the bite, reel to pressure, and try to break that rod in half when you turn and swing into her. Don't forget to keep reeling.

Line is another part of the equation you don't want to cut corners on.
For me I use suffix 832 braid with a 6' leader of 20lb. Tatsu fluorocarbon,
Learn any version of the Albright knot for attaching the leader. I'm still on my first 200 yard spool of tatsu from this January.

I throw mine on a 764 Dobyns Champion on 14-17lb fluorocarbon. I use to gown the Powell 765 cb/sbr and I must admit that is one of my favorite rods for small swimsbaits and cranks.

The 6" Trash Fish is a light weight swimbait + whatever style rig you plan to use. Basically any 6" hollow body swimbait keel weight hook rig works well. Any rod that is rated for 1 oz weight will work OK, so it comes down to your preference of manufacturer of a 4 to 5 power jig/ worm rod, 6'6" to 7'6"....a lot of choices. The heavy wire keel, weight hooks require at least 14# FC line. The reel standard 6.3-1 bait casting bass reel, again lots of choices.
You more than likely have an outfit that will work!

The Dobyns champion 734 is, in my opinion, the best smaller swimbait rod ever made. This rod is a little shorter than a lot of typical swimbiat rods but is awesome because you can make very accurate casts around docks or cover. The 734 also has the best rod tip for swimbaits, the hook up ratio is incredible. I fish trash fish quite a bit and can assure you that you will love this rod. Another rod I recently picked up is a champion 765CB. Although labeled a crank bait rod, it is an excellent rod for swimbaits. It has a fairly heavy action, but a soft tip. The 765CB is perfect for an S-waver or triple trout or any other similar baits. And for me the go-to real is a shimano curado, the best real at a good price.

The iROD IRG744c is another great option. I prefer this rod with 15lb. Seagur in more open water or sparse weeds.
If I'm fishing in the junk I'll go with the IRG754f "Fred's Magic Stick" with 65lb Suffix 832 braid and a 20lb leader of Seagur. It's similar to the 744c...only on performance enhancing agents!

That's my preference too. I like to use both of mine with braid and a FC leader (15-20lb).

A dobyns Champion 764 is hard to beat for trash fish if you ask me. I like to use 17lb Seaguar Invizx and an Owner Weighted Beast hook in the 8/0 3/8oz size most of the time. A Dobyns Champion 734 is also a really good choice when you're fishing a Trash Fish in a little bit tighter quarters casting to very specific areas, especially in shallow water. In those cases im usually fishing it on 50-65lb Seaguar Kanzen braid with a 20lb Invizx leader. The 734 in the Dobyns Champion line has just a little bit slower action than other comparable rods and the braided line really helps to get a good solid hookset and get that fish turned. Also id like to recommend that you check out the Lew's line of reels. I use the Tournament Pro model on all of my rods and there is a good reason for that...they are impossible to beat for the price.
