Alabama Rig

I've been trying the Alabama rig, but having trouble with it swimming upright. I've seen the vid with the guy using his fingers to spread it, but that doesn't work much. I could just paint the head black or white i guess....I've tried the lighter baits on top, heavier on bottom thing. Am I supposed to spread it wide or tight together? Tight together was snagging on itself. Whats the best way to get it to balance?
