Bass spawn
Bass spawn
Question: Do all female bass spawn if they can and what happens to them if they don't? Do they just release their eggs anywhere if they can't find a partner?
Re: Bass spawn
Most females will start to spawn when they reach about two years old/twelve inches or more in length!
From everything I have learned over the years as well as talking to a couple biologist friends of mine the females almost always will find a mate and spawn and if for some reason they lose their bedding area; dropping water level or pulled off the bed and moved by a tournament guy to be weighed in they will hold off for as long as they can and try to find suitable bedding area before they abort or drop their eggs.
I have also been told by a few other folks/guides as well as these same biologist that some bass will spawn more than once in waters that hold the proper tempertures for extended periods of time, I believe this due to the fact that I have seen fish caught in May, June and July that are full of eggs.
So, I think that if mama cant find a man to help out with the fertilization of the eggs for what ever reason she will either absorb the eggs or abort them and start new!
