Micro guides with heavy mono and fluorocarbon

Post by TonyM »

I don't currently own any rods with mirco guides. For those of you that use them-how do they cast with heavy mono and fluorocarbon, say 20#? It seems to me the large diameter lines would cause more friction in the small guides. Thoughts?

Hey Tony,

Micro guides actually make rods more sensitive and they also make them cast more efficiently. Since micro are very small, they magnify every vibration at the end of your line. They also help managed line memory — minimizing those coils usually associated with standard guides. As long as you use the right diameter line rated for the rod you'll be just fine. Take a look at the Veritas rods by Abu Garica. They make 5 different models in the micro guide series. http://www.abugarcia.com/products/rods/veritas

I hope this helps you next time your out on the water.

I had my first micro guide rod made a few months ago. It is a HMX High Mod spinnerbait blank and I throw a lot of 20lb. Sniper with moving baits and it works great. It seems like I am getting a few extra feet on the cast. It is also much smoother.

You lose a lot of the advantages of micro guides with short range tactics. The shock that your rod takes while flipping and pitching causes a lot of guys to stick with regular guides for short range tactics. The Fuji micro guides have a pretty good foot, but it is not as big as a regular Concept guide. I have heard of guys breaking off micro guides on the hookset at close range. This probably happens with the cheaper rods not wrapped properly from the start.

I would suggest you take a look at the Dobyns Savvy series line of Micro guides. These are already light, extremely sensitive rods but the micro guides are great for feeling every little bite. I recently used both the Microguide Savvy and the Coalition on Clear Lake for a bed fishing trip and the micro handled itself great! Let me know if you have any other questions or check them out on the Website, dobynsrods.com
