Who should be favored at Clear Lake Open ?

Post by kitjack »

With a boat at stake you gotta like Dobyn''s chances to add yet another boat to his total. But I'm sure anyone can be called a favorite on Clear Lake when the bite is on, but who else is an obvious contender to win? Over 3 days it could take 75 lbs!

All the usual suspects of course...Mark Crutcher, Wayne Breazeale, Paul Bailey, Mike Tuck, Jackson Juarez...the list goes on
I'm really looking forward to getting up there for this one, I haven't been to Clear Lake in almost a year!!
This should be a great event!! You're not gonna want to miss this one!

Thanks Tobey

The name Ron Tobey should be at the top of that list. I remember a guy named Ron Tobey who came roaring back from 12th place to win a WON BASS Pro Am at Clear Lake 2 years ago, beating out Mike Folkestad who had over 30-lbs on day one. It was a comeback day that you can only dream about as a bass competitor. Image doing that over three days and with a boat at stake, with more sponsor support, and at our own California state championship event at Clear lake. That is what we are trying to do.

I have heard it said about a 1,000 times, over the last 20-30 years that the US OPEN should be be moved or alternated to Clear Lake. The U.S. OPEN needs to be at Lake Mead, but you guys are right that Clear Lake and California also deserve a big event and that is what the goal is with this tournament. It will take a few years to get this where we really imagine, but this years event is going to be special and we hope you will all pull together and be there.

To get signed up call Billy Egan at 949-366-0030 ext 40 or sign up online with a credit card at www.wonbass.com . You can also download the entry form and see the payback from our website, which includes a Nitro Z-7 and cash on first place. The daily options are included in the basic entry fess with both daily big stringer and big bass awards. We have had some additional sponsors get involved in the last day with product prizes and it's going to be a great tournament at an incredible lake.

The 9.95 that put Tobey over the top that day in 2011. He got it on the second cast of the day.

What I wonder is whether the tournament will be won by one of the many talented young pro's, or an old pro with decades of experience. The new trend to throwing huge swim baits and catching huge bass and not simply fishing for a limit has changed the game. But there is no doubt that the old pro's still win many bass tournaments, especially when the stakes are highest.

So here we are with an OPEN tournament with a boat on first and most of the best anglers will be fishing it. And it's 3 days so that is going to change things a lot, as you will not have to be perfect every day. And Clear lake often has what seems to be an endless amount of big fish all over the lake, so anyone can win it if they get into them.

But who will win ? The seasoned pro, the Clear Lake regular, some guy from the south doing things differently, or the young gun throwing huge baits and going a mile a minute all day long ? I have been thinking about it and I keep changing my mind.

So while I don't have a clue, I can't wait to find out. This tournament is really shaping up great and we hope you get signed up and come on out and fish the Northern California Open at Clear Lake. It's going to be a great event. We have over 60 boats and counting, so there is no telling where we will end up. One thing I know is that we will be awarding a Nitro Z-7 and lots of cash on first place, there will be daily included options and we will have a lot of great sponsor support. And lastly you probably are going to really regret not being there. So get involved and help us make this the great tournament we want it to become, and an annual tradition that all western bass anglers can look forward to each year.
