Pod vs Skimmer Transducer

Post by fpomilia »

Lowrance sent me a replacement transducer which was a skimmer. I advised them that Gone Fishin Marine had installed my units and installed the shoot thru Pod Transducer. I was informed that the units came with skimmers for shoot thru and electric motor and I would need to provide prof of purchase of the pod transducer which was not listed on the invoice. Is there any significant difference in the transducers? Paid over 6K for the set up and trusted them to install the correct equipment.

The units all do come with Skimmer type transducers or no transducer at all. Some dealers will get units with no transducer so they can put in what is more relevant to each customer. The major difference is that Skimmers all have the temp built in. While it will work perfectly fine as a shoot through transducer, it will be measuring temp in your bilge not the water! A pod type (PDRT-WBL) provides a remote temp probe that is attached to the outside of the boat with the transducer being epoxied into the bilge and is the one that you are wanting if I understand your application correctly. I'm not quite understanding the issue though. Are you saying GFM installed the Skimmer into your bilge and you want a pod type? Or are you replacing a pod type which was installed correctly but failed and Lowrance sent you a Skimmer. In my experience GFM knows how to install electronics. A partial solution is if you have an LSS transducer, you can pull temp off that instead of the skimmer. This will not work with Touch units though.

Have a faulty transducer. Lowrance sent me a skimmer transducer. I advised that I have a pod transducer and would need to exchange them. They stated that ALL the GEN 2 HDS units come with skimmers and I would need to show proof of purchase of the pod transducer before they will exchange them. My units are still on warranty and not really sure why the problem in exchanging the transducers.

As far as the internal parts, the crystal, connections and receiver are the same when comparing the puck ducer to a skimmer ducer. If you are gluing the skimmer into the bilge area of the boat, it will work just fine. The only thing to watch for it to make sure the skimmer is upright when you leave the two part epoxy to set up. The puck is easier to epoxy because of the flat bottom but the skimmer works just fine after the epoxy dries and the ducer is facing the bottom in the same way a puck would have been facing.
