Pyramid lake water level

Post by OU812 »

With all the talk of drought, pics of Lake Mead, Shasta et al, on a recent trip to So. Cal. I was surprised to see Pyramid Lake totally FULL, higher than I have ever seen it . What is up with that? :?

Pyramid gets aqueduct water. They can fill it anytime they want. So does Castaic.

Pyramid hasn't gotten aqueduct water in some time, nor has Castaic.

Water is recirculated from Elderberry (reservoir above Castaic main lake). It is always full for multiple reasons, one being power. If you have noticed as you are entering the lake, the small power plant to the right. There are always eddies as the water enters in to the lake.

Scott,
Does the water coming up back up from Castaic come all the way up to that power station next to the entry road?

The power to pump water back up to Pyramid from Castaic costs DWP too much to just do it for fun, so that's why they used to release water down to Castaic during the week, when the price they got for the power they generated was high, and then pump it back up on the weekends when power was cheaper.
Now the water is rising during the week at Pyramid, so the new water is not coming up from Castaic.
Where is it coming from?

Just a guess but the closest water supply to pyramid is Quail lake just above pyramid on the hwy 138. Basically the California aquaduct.
