Alabama Gill Net Bill Dies in State Senate

The bill to allow net fishing on the Tennessee River died in the Senate this legislative session, and the sponsor said he won't bring it back next year.

House Bill 258, which passed the House with support from north Alabama lawmakers, would have allowed commercial fishermen's nets to return to the waterways.

The ban is decades old but wasn't enforced by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources until late 2012. The nets were used by commercial fishermen to catch large amounts of fish by blocking a section of a stream or waterway.
